Essay Instructions: FINAL PROJECT:

The final project will be a research paper on Risk or Crisis Communication. You may choose any form that you find interesting. This project is NOT, however, about explaining a crisis that has happened - but IS about applying and synthesizing the information from this course to that particular crisis. Thus, this is a communications project.

Select a topic (Crisis communication: Overcoming barriers when crafting an effective risk communication strategy ). This topic should revolve around a crisis or emergency situation of which you have awareness. Any form of risk or crisis communication is fine. You do not have to limit to a specific type. Look at the communication and public relations lessons learned; use the information you've learned in class and apply it to a specific aspect of risk or crisis communication. I'm not looking for a "book report" about some crisis, but rather looking to see you synthesize the information you've learned throughout the course and apply it to a situation.

I am looking for you to conduct scholarly research on this project as well. You will be required to have ten references, five of which must be academic in nature, typically peer-reviewed. Peer-reviewed journals are those that academic journals that have other scholars review the articles prior to publication. Many (most) found in the library qualify - - I am suggesting that "Newsweek" or the "Drudge Report" are journalism or editorial and not of high enough quality for other than background.

The guidance for this paper is very broad; this is intentional. It is expected that you, as graduate students, are able to select appropriate topics and develop a risk communication project that is appropriate to the level of this degree.

Specific and Technical Criteria:

1. Use the APA style for project. This includes title page, formatting, citations, and references.
a. 1” margins
b. 12 pt. serif font (such as Times New Roman)
c. Singled spaced
3. Use a minimum of ten (10) references; five (5) of which must be from peer-reviewed, scholarly journals (the resource list below contains acceptable references, or you are welcome to seek your own).
4. Submit a minimum of 8 pages and not more than 10 excluding all title, reference, etc.
5. Use OUTSTANDING written communication skills.
6. Pay close attention to spelling and grammar.

Grading Rubric for final project:
Synthesis of course material: 50%
Effectiveness of written communication: 30%
Spelling and Grammar: 15%
Proper use of APA Style: 5%

Essay Instructions: Business Communications (Summative Assessment)

Write a Crisis Communication Plan (1500 Words)

You are the marketing manager of a leading global technology company ?Globecell?. Globecell have recently launched the most successful selling smart phone in the market rivalling Apple and Blackberry. Although product testing was undertaken the process was not detailed enough in thorough product testing and now Globecell are going to have to recall over 150,000 handsets/units because the handset is not able to function correctly due to handset overheating.

These issues has been identified and communicated back to Globecell from customers complaining to Globecell and its distributors directly within the last week. From this a large amount of negative feedback from online/social media platforms has erupted. Customers are very unhappy at the fact that they cannot use vital 3G services, email and make/receive calls due this defect with the Smartphone.
You will need to write a plan in order for Globecell to react and respond to customers effectively. Consider what your corporate reaction should be and how you can manage current and future communications with the social media, press, customers and key stakeholders. You will need to demonstrate that you can create an effective strategy for crisis communications and have a robust corporate plan in order to recall the technology successfully and deal with this crisis.

Your plan must consider all areas of business communication and should provide recommendations going forward on how to improve the current situation and what measures can be put in place in order to manage a crisis.

Please note the crisis plan must be a formal document and should be treated as a corporate response suitable to show the executive senior management and the Globecell board of directors.
Limit 1500 words.

Corporate Risk Management – Emergency & Contingency Planning Communication

Reflect on the relationship between crisis communications and contingency planning pre-event, post-event and in the recovery period.

Notes:

It is important that recognition – meaning knowledge, understanding, and application – is directed towards the development of crisis communications. This should ultimately be an integral requirement in the process of the formulation and implementation of successful contingency plans, particularly those needed for emergency situations.

In general terms there are three stages of contingency planning: -

PRE-INCIDENT PLANNING – to minimise the effect of any incident through risk identification, analysis and control and to create written plans to deal with the unexpected.

EMERGENCY HANDLING – detailing the actions and responsibilities of individual managers/employees during the incident.

POST-LOST RECOVERY – getting the organisation back to full operation as soon as possible after the loss.

The priority in dealing with a crisis is first of all protection of people, followed by protection of the assets of the organisation. A priority list may incorporate the following:

? Preventing any threat to life, health or safety.
? Minimising any distress or avoidable worry to individuals and to the public at large.
? Taking socially responsible action in dealing with issues.
? Protecting the company’s commercial interests.
? Protecting the company’s reputation.

Decisions have to be made quickly and therefore preparation and planning are crucial. As with all forms of contingency planning, an organisation depends on:

? A trained crisis management team
? A manual and checklists of action during the crisis
? The equipment and physical support required to carry out any action which might be required.
