Essay Instructions: In the tradition of the great explorers who ventured in new paths, this assignment asks you to search the many databases available to UMUC students to find and use scholarly resources in compiling a research paper. Your task begins with selecting a specific topic from the list below or another topic approved by your instructor. Your goal is to discover sources you would use to write a research paper from current research in that specific area. (NOTE: YOU WILL NOT ACTUALLY BE WRITING A RESEARCH PAPER.) Your sources can be found in a variety of communication-related journals. Your essay should provide a summary of current thinking within the specific area you have selected. The paper should be five to six pages in length, not including title page or reference page. The exercise will also help you to develop your skills in technology fluency and information literacy: your abilities, in other words, to navigate successfully online databases, retrieve, and evaluate relevant information, and meaningfully relate that information to a research project of your own.

Conceptual areas for your topic include:

Self image and self esteem
After you have selected a topic to research and found your sources, you will create a bibliographic citation in APA format for each source. That will serve as the reference page for your paper. In the text of the paper you will include an annotated bibliography for all of the entries. That means you should read each source and write a paragraph or two for each source that both describes and evaluates the content of the document. For each article you should summarize the main argument and explain how it is or is not useful for someone writing a paper on your selected topic. An annotation should indicate the thesis and focus of the article, as well as the author's major arguments and conclusions. Format:

3 - 6 pages, double spaced
written in college-level English (grammar, spelling, sentence structure, paragraphs)
logical, well organized and supported
citations within text
resource page with full citations at the end of the paper
APA Style
Consider your primary audience to be your classmates and your secondary audience to be me.


Grading Criteria

Minimum number of sources included (5).
Sources are professional or scholarly
Works Cited list uses correct APA style throughout document, both in formatting (spacing, justification, etc.) and in type and order of information provided.
A thorough annotation will have most or all of the following characteristics:
Summarizes and evaluates the content
Identifies the main argument, points, and/or purpose of the work
Considers the worth, effectiveness, and usefulness of the work, both in terms of the topic discussed in the article and your own research project;
Identifies a particular point of view, perspective, or bias from which the work was written;
May draw comparisons between sources in the reference list. Annotations can establish connections to other aspects of the same argument or opposing views.

Essay Instructions: Dear Writer,

I'll be sending you my Research Proposal as a resource to be used. Please try to use the works I've mentioned and used in my preliminary 'literature review' in the main body also and, of course, add more.

The overall tone of the disseration should be that self image and self perception influence out choice of luxury fashion brands a lot. Obviously, it is not the only factor that influeces us, but it should be made to sound like it is an important factor. This should be derrived from the literature review and, more over, the primary reseach conducted namely: Focus Groups should reach that conclusion. Furthermore, an interview will be conducted with an industry expert in the Swiss fashion retail market. This point should be built in. The interview itself will be conducted at a later stage and mentioned in the final version of the dissertation.

Layout should be:

The dissertation should be typed in font 12 and with double line spacing. Footnotes, indented quotations and appendices may be single line spaced. There should be a Margin of 2cm around and a binding edge margin of 4cm.

For this esaay, develop an analysis of the selling of self image in the popular media. Locate an advertisement that sells any number of drugs, from over-the-counter muscle building supplements to prescription drugs, or medical treatments such as Botox injections or hair restoration. These ads should be marketed to alleviate one type of social stigma such as anxiety, impotence, or aging (note that the essay provided by Susan McCarthy, On Immortality is based on aging)
Consider who the audience of the ad is and what assumptions the ad makes about its intended audience. Your thesis should answer the question `what type of self-image are these ads promoting or selling` Or `in what ways is the intended drug of procedure presented as a path to achieving self fulfillment`? You also will want to think about how the ads sell the idea that happiness is connected to one`s social status.

Note: Please develop a strong thesis (do not use, `This paper is to analyze.....`) The Point of View for writing this paper is: 3rd person. Do not use I, We, he, she etc. 4 pages of text required.
