Instructions for Pain College Essay Examples

Essay Instructions: Pain is suffered by all patients undergoing surgery. The severity of pain will vary from patient to patient. It is the nurse caring for the patient in the postoperative phase who manages the patient's pain. Questions often arise regarding pain assessment, nurses under estimation and mismanagement of patient pain, whether the modes of administration or medical orders for pain management are suitable.

With this in mind, discuss management of acute pain in the post-operative patient with attention to the following:

a) Definition and brief introduction to the topic.

b) The physiology of pain.

c) Pain management strategies, including assessment, drugs, methods of administration and alternatives to drugs.

d) The effect of different pain management strategies in relation to pain physiology.

e) How groups such as paediatric, elderly and other cultures may be different in their presentation of pain and management.

Look for journal articles that are not more than 6 years old regarding pain management, since methods of pain relief and attitudes to pain have changed radically in the last 6 years. You may discuss the topic with nursing and medical personnel working in the area of pain management to help you, but your key sources should be drawn from relevant literature.

Preparation
?Write in the third person; avoid personal pronouns such as 'I' and 'you';
?Avoid long, confusing sentences and check that your tenses (past, present and future) are consistent in the same sentence;
?Avoid posing questions - these detract from the strength of your argument/discussion;
?Use plain English. It is essential to demonstrate that you understand the nature of the topic

1) Identifies and describes common opioid misconceptions and the reasons why they exist
,
2) Critically discusses their specific impact on both the accuracy of pain assessment, decisions regarding the use of analgesics (including opioids) and the timely and necessary involvement of other members of the multidisciplinary team;

3) Provides factual evidence from both your readings and wider research to dispel each misconception, and

4) Outlines a plan, strategies and resources for education that you personally could use in your day to day dealings with both clients and colleagues in order to change attitudes and help minimize the impact of these misconceptions

Rationale

The rationale for this assignment is for you to critically examine common misconceptions pertaining to opioids (as introduced in Modules 1-2) and the ways in which they impact on pain management practice, in order to facilitate changes that result in more positive pain management outcomes.
