The Mayo Clinic was started in a 1880s by a father and his two sons and grew from a frontier doctor’s office into a healthcare giant on the frontiers of medicine. The clinic pioneered many advances in medicine in the arenas of new treatments, new approaches to organizing doctors, new medical records and education for doctors, research, and publication of medical research. Along the way, Mayo earned an enviable reputation through the strength of its performance in the eyes of physicians and patients alike.

As the Mayo Clinic became famous, it realized that it must nurture the brand that it created. That meant investing in marketing and strategic thought about marketing, even as the organization thrived on word-of-mouth. In particular, the clinic needed to think about prospective partners, ensuring that each new partner adds something to Mayo while not creating a risk to Mayo's good name.
