Instructions for Mahatma College Essay Examples

Essay Instructions: Mahatma Gandhi, one of the world's greatest spiritual and political leaders of the 20th century, was a business leader as well. Below he articulates his understanding of the customer in terms of hospitality:

?A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption to our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider in our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favor by serving him. He is doing us a favor by giving us an opportunity to do so.?

Gandhi went well beyond ?the customer is always right? mentality to create a model for business management and leadership based on customer service. Expressed in vocabulary of the Jesuit tradition, Gandhi seems to imply an intimate connection between cura personalis and profitability. To put it another way, he seems to have advocated a ?preferential option for the customer.?

How do you see the relationship between personal values and commercial success? In your essay, aim for fresh insights, not for clich?s. Include at least one, real-world example to illustrate your thinking.

Title: Untouchability by Mahatma Gandhi

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1601 References: 3 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: This assignment is about critically interacting with the article "Untouchability," by Mahatma Gandhi. This assignment is not just a critique of the authors/articles. Feel free to bring in other opinions/authors (in other words, besides the actual article itself, use two other sources that are relevant to Gandhi's article). Leave no stone unturned. Be sure to situate yourself in the review and give acknowledgment to the social and political realities of a multicultural society. This assignment requires careful, higher-order thinking beyond the typical "yes" and "no" responses. Also, use the following: 1) A summary of his main argument 2) An analysis of the strength and/or weakness of the main argument. Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the philosophical assumptions of the author. Speculate on how others might respond to Gandhi's position, especially based on Indian history and culture. Be thorough and candid. 3) A discussion of the implications for American stratified society- in other words, what difference does Gandhi's argument make in the pursuit of equality in a multicultural and capitalist America. You are expected to comment directly on the religious, cultural, and economic aspects of American society.
