Title: Personal Statement for Graduate School

Total Pages: 2 Words: 631 References: 0 Citation Style: None Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: The following is rough text for a personal statement to be used in applying to a graduate school. Please HELP! The student's writing skills leave much to be desired. Thanks!

If you consider that I graduated from Stonehill College with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and in Communications, one may find it rather odd that I all of a sudden wish to pursue graduate studies in education. Well the truth of the matter is that when I first got to Stonehill my freshman year I had intensions of becoming an education major because teaching was something that really seemed to interest me. However, with the time commitment that I had to give to playing football, I wasn’t able to give all my attention to education. I know that by getting my graduate degree at Long Island University I will have the best chance at succeeding in my career goals. I’ve always had a passion for wanting to teach and attending Long Island University would be the first step in achieving that goal.
When I was younger, my family tended to move around a lot; not far, but enough were I had to change schools several times. When we finally settled down in Centerport on Long Island I was definitely relieved that I was finally going to be able to get some sort of sense of normalcy. I ended up going to St. Anthony’s High School and I believe that this is where I first found out that I wanted to pursue teaching. In tenth grade, I had two teachers who, for the first time in my life, made me look forward to going to class; my English teacher, Mr. Selen, and my math teacher, Mr. Roslund. I knew that they were good teachers and taught me very well because I received good grades from them all year and did well on my regents exams. Not only that but they also made class fun and enjoyable while educating their students. I knew right then that I wanted to be able to do the same things they were doing. As stated previously, I eventually graduated from St. Anthony’s and then went to Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Communications.
Recently, I helped to organize and run a 9/11 fundraiser where kids got to meet former football players of the New York Jets and then got to actually play a little bit with them as well. I organized different drills for the kids to partake in and helped to guide them through the day in a structured manner. I definitely feel that this is the type of skill that is crucial for teachers to have because it’s all well and good if you are an expert in the material that you want to teach, but it is also vital that you are able to connect with who you are trying to teach as well. Last spring I also had an internship in the Stoughton District Courthouse in Massachusetts. While I was here I worked with a probation officer and helped him with all of his cases. Many of these cases were actually juveniles and adolescents who had gotten into some trouble. I worked with many teens that came from “bad backgrounds” and got to know how they feel and what they think on a more personal level. Again, this is a skill I feel that is necessary for educators to possess.
Personally, I hope to attend Long Island University so that I can get my degree in education and then I can look for work with a middle school or a high school. I also plan to get into coaching football at the middle school or high school level since football has always been another passion of mine. I have also been a big believer that coaching and teaching go hand-in-hand. So hopefully my career in teaching and coaching will be set, and I can be one of the few people that can say that they enjoy going to work every day.

There are faxes for this order.
