Instructions for Food Labeling College Essay Examples

Essay Instructions: The topic:
You are working as the chief nutritionist for the Australian Government Health Department. The current minister of health is interested in introducing the "Percentage Daily Intake" food labelling system in Australia. Your task is to prepare a briefing document assessing the effectiveness of the "Percentage Daily Intake" food labelling system. You can find more information on this food labeling system on the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand website http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/.

Criteria One:
Nutrition promotion can be implemented in a ?top down? or ?bottom up? approach.
Discuss which of these approaches is relevant to the "Percentage Daily Intake"
food labelling system and the strengths and limitations of this approach with regards
to nutrition promotion.

Notes for Crieria One:
In this section you need to briefly explain the top down and bottom up approaches, indicate which approach is most relevant to the % daily intake (which, in this case, is "top down") and then discuss the strengths and limitations of this approach with regards to the % Daily intake labelling system or more broadly with regards to front of pack labelling.

More info on top down approach: The percentage daily intake labelling system was implemented using a top-down approach without the consultation with the target group. The top-down approach is enables FoP labelling to be implemented nationally, with minimal the assistance of nutrition experts. The top-down approach enables the government to exert control over the accuracy of information being disseminated to the public, which leads to minimal error in delivering key nutiriotn messages.

Crtieria two: (675 words)
Discuss the relationship between nutrition knowledge and behaviour change. Citing
the literature, discuss if the "Percentage Daily Intake" food labelling system can
improve nutrition knowledge and result in positive changes in food behaviour with
regards to health.

There is a shortage of research specifically about Australian %DI and its effect on consumer behaviour so it is OK to include European evidence about the influence of %GDA label on consumer food behaviour as this system is quite similar to Australian %DI?

This section would typically focus on social marketing as a communication tool.

This essay needs to include:
Critical analysis the range of theories and methods used in nutrition promotion (see attached pdf document for clarification of nutrition theories/models)

Understand the ways in which social, psychological and environmental
