Essay Instructions: scenario
New job, new lifestyle

You have taken the plunge—left a dreary job and made the choice of either starting up your own business or changing careers. Whichever of these options you choose, though, you know that there are certain things you have to consider. For example, you've just done a pretty thorough examination of your financial situation, and you know that you've got enough funds to survive unaided for three months. That means that you are going to have to find out something about benefits for which you might be eligible. Probably before you do that, however, you need to decide exactly what you're best suited for—a small, home business, or a professional career, perhaps? Given this situation, a personal skills-audit is necessary.

Armed with your new-found knowledge about your abilities, it's time to decide on a career. What would you choose, and what retraining options are available? (For the purposes of this exercise, you should choose something that requires retraining for a period of over three months.) If you choose a new business, what are some of the other vital pieces of information you should know about (for example, how would you register your business?)

Finally, consider whether you have the support of your family and friends. What are the consequences of your being at classes all day, studying all night, not going down to the pub as much, or generally being able to spend as much time with your family and friends as you'd like? Is there any strategy you can use to keep the lines of communication open, so that you can share and build on your experience?

If you wish you may slightly alter the context of the scenario so that it is more relevant to your own personal situation. For example if you chose scenario 2 ‘Coping with illness’ you could substitute another illness which was of more interest to you or one which you had encountered personally. If you are unsure about how much you can alter the scenario, please contact your tutor or the Course Coordinator.

The purpose of these assignments is for you to demonstrate that you can develop a search strategy and locate and evaluate information from a wide range of sources to satisfy a particular information need. The emphasis is therefore is on the process taken to acquire the information not on providing the best answer to the question.

You will need to:

· Identify a range of suitable resources

· Clarify the problem by developing a mind map showing all the possible keywords, links and associations (If you just enter mindmap in any search engine, you'll find plenty of free ones to download, if you don't want to hand draw one. However, make sure you can export or download or copy and paste the mindmap you create in these programs into Word, otherwise they won't be of much use!!)

· Use the mind map to refine your understanding of the topic and to identify keywords

· Locate the information sources

· Evaluate three information sources and identify how useful each one was in providing appropriate information

Write a report of your findings. The report (1000 - 1500 words) should contain the following:

Cover page

Table of contents

An introduction

A clear explanation of the problem

Resources located and how you went about this

Evaluation of three specific resources

A conclusion which suggests the most appropriate solution for the scenario and identifies how successful you were in completing the information task

References

The mind map (this can be created using any suitable computer program or hand drawn) showing how you decided on the scope of the topic. Other appendices may include significant useful information regarding the scenario

please write a report on the above scenario.
