Ms Donna Shirley
Johnston Elementary School

Ms Shirley,
Let me began by stating how much Rob and I admire and support Hillary’s teachers. We were somewhat concerned about moving to Cobb County to Cherokee two years ago, but have been delighted. Hillary has been fortunate to have excellent teachers and wonderful school. She has always loved school. I came from the family of teachers. My mother was elementary and middle school teacher. My father was high school teacher and I was teacher at School of business at Kennesaw state.
We have tried to teach Hillary to always be respectful of her teachers because we know firsthand how difficult is to be teacher. Teachers are overworked and underpaid.
Something happened last Tuesday that upset Hillary terribly for the entire day and evening. From what she told us she forget a paper and received a warning for detention.
Last week was busy and difficult for us.We has commitments every night. I know that Hillary completed paper because she did homework while I was fixing supper before we left Wednesday evening.
When she came home last Tuesday she was crying and stated she had the worst day of the life. She explained what happened and we tried to talk with her and comfort her. At bad time she realized she had not completed her book for her reading. She was absolutely scared to death that she would get detention. She cried so much she could not go to sleep and was afraid to go to school on Friday.
Since she was upset and scared I did not make her go to school on Friday. She stayed home and finished her 161-page reading book. I am not sure what detention is but it has scared Hillary.
We expect a lot of Hilary because we both work. She is an only child and we depend on her. She has to help take care of five horses every evening. This includes cleaning stalls, feeding and watering them as well bringing them in for pasture. She is also responsible for her room and her homework.
It concerns me that Hillary was afraid to go to school on Friday. This is the first time in her formal education that she has not wanted to go to school.
I don’t want Hillary to be afraid to go to school or feel like she is failure’s feel Rob and I are somewhat to blame for this incident because of our hectic schedule last week. According to Hillary this is the only assignment she has failed to turn in, her grade card was all A’s as it has always been, so I feel she is probably telling me a truth.
I did not sleep last Thursday because Hillary was upset. I am sure this experience will stay with her long time. I feel confident that she will not forget her paper again. Because of the impact this warning has had on the Hillary is there any way that you can talk with Hillary?
Maybe she has not turned something else which caused the warning. I do not think she could be more upset. I told her warning for detention might not be as serious as she seems to think it is. To her nothing could be worst.
I was downtown last Friday for conference. I have hoped to get by to talk with you. them but unfortunately did not get home in time.
If you feel that student, parent and teacher conferences are needed please call me. I would apprecitiate talking with you or hearing from you. I just want to understand situation better. Thank you
Sincerely
Deborah Roebuck
