Discussion Papers: Revised
Each of you will write two discussion papers and give a short presentation on each paper. The due dates and topics will depend upon which dates you sign up for. Each paper must be e-mailed to me by 9a.m. on the Tuesday before the date you sign up for. For example, if you sign up for Wednesday, 9/25/13, then your paper needs to be e-mailed to me by Tuesday, 9/24 at 9 a.m. Please make sure not to send in late papers!
Paper Requirements:
These papers are meant to be exploratory so don't feel as if you need to have a perfect argument. That said, the papers do need to have a strong focus. You must analyze either a specific character, theme, or scene. What I am looking for is a paper that isn't afraid to take leaps and investigate new ideas. I intend these papers to foster class discussion. Do not merely summarize, you must analyze the text. You must also provide evidence from the text in your analysis, which means you have to use direct quotations. You need to identify which specific section(s) of the text you are discussing and provide a direct explanation as to why this portion of text is important. This is a short paper and I want it to be focused. Don't bite off more than you can chew here: focus on something specific that you can adequately explain within 2 pages.
Any paper that merely summarizes will receive a failing grade.
Presentation Requirements:
During class discussion, I will ask each presenter to briefly explain the argument of their paper to the class. I will likely do this at the beginning of each class, but may wait until later in the discussion depending on the topic of the paper. After you explain the paper, I will ask a question or two that will help focus further discussion of the ideas explored in your paper.

Title: Similiarities in A Room of One's Own and To the Lighthouse

Total Pages: 5 Words: 1583 References: 2 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: "To The Lighhouse" and " A Room of One's Own" by Virginia Woolfe. The similiarities in this fiction and non-fiction piece by the same author. I have come up with these two ideas please include them:
In "To the Lighthouse" Mr. Tansley says to Lily "Women can't paint, women can't write..." while clearly "A Room of One's Own" is all about how women indeed can write.
In "A Room of One's Own" Virginia Woolfe speaks about how we need both the masculine and the femine parts of our brains. In "To the Lighthouse" Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey exist as if they are two halves of the same person.

The sources need only to be these 2 books.

Title: Daughters

Total Pages: 6 Words: 1924 Works Cited: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Analyze the representation of the concept of “Daughters” in two or more works. (As an example, you could discuss the specific characters and how they represent status/inheritance, etc)

Texts to use and quote from:

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (translated by Richard Pevear, Vintage Books)

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (edited by James Kinsley, Oxford University Press)

To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

King Lear, by William Shakespeare (edited by Stephen Orgel, Penguin Books)

****The important words here are “analyze” and “representation”. You are looking for HOW the idea is interpreted and expressed in the book, not simply looking for examples of it (although this will be your first step)

****DO NOT SUMMARIZE THE TEXTS- no need for it anywhere in the essay****
Back up evidence with brief, to the point quotations instead of block quotes

Give the essay a relevant title.

I will send specific guidelines as a "resource"

Title: Virginia Woolf's view on women in

Total Pages: 19 Words: 6146 Bibliography: 10 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: I'm asked to prepare a term research paper about this topic. Before giving you the details I'd like to mention that I've tried some other web writing services before, and the work was not up to my expectations,I really was deceived. The writer treated the topic superficially repeating the same ideas in all paragraphs and finally I realized that I had to re-do the work by myself, which was a loss of money and time. Now when I found your website on the net, it inspires me some kind of trust . I hope you give my research paper to a specialist writer in literature, it is important as it’s my last year at university to graduate. As I told you I'm a Moroccan brilliant student. I don't want the writer to use a very difficult or sophisticated language, I want rather a well organized work,a deep analysis, not a superficial discussion of the topic just to fill the papers ( I'm sorry to say so but I have undergone this as I said ),but it should meanwhile be adequate to my undergraduate level, not very advanced or professional. As I will have to discuss my research paper with my supervisor every week and will have an oral exam about it at the end,I don't have the right to cite sources of bibliography that I haven’t read. Consequently, as bibliography, you can use primary or secondary sources only, and please let me know about them to read them in advance in case that my supervisor asks me about them. And I would like you to read : A Room of One's Own, the book we're working on,by Virginia Woolf; Diaries and Journals of literary women from Fanny Burney to Virginia Woolf; Diary of Virginia Woolf, vol 1-5; Three Guineas,by Virginia Woolf ( as long as it discusses the same topic )To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf ( only to assist the thesis by its similarities to the topic ); Feminist Literary Criticism: Explorations in Theory,by Josephine Donovan, and some other relevant articles and notes in the internet ( only 2 or 3 ). I didn't prepare an outline ( outline , not table of contents ), so I hope you do it for me , because the supervisor asked me to do it as soon as possible, so as to show him that I’m advancing in my work. Just to show him the titles and subtitles and subtopics I'm going to discuss. Another thing, if the research demands you more than 15 days I can give you more time, on the condition that we keep in touch the writer and me, so that I stay informed about the development of the paper in order to keep my supervisor informed as well. The paper must contain an Introduction , body divided in 2 parts ( let me know what you think each part will be dealing with ) and the conclusion. Please try to read the sources as soon as possible to come up with an outline and if you have any relevant sources let me know so as to see if they are available for me. Another important thing : don't forget the in-text citations, footnotes for quotations(, MLA style )etc..
