Instructions for Stopping By Woods College Essay Examples

Essay Instructions: * Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening (1923)

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the villiage though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

** In "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," how do the words Robert Frost uses in the poem communicate the moment of peacefulness he describes? Why does Frost repeat the final line? Are we meant to "hear" that line in a different way the second time?

?Cold and miserable things.? In Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

?Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening? can be seen as of Robert Frost?s simplest poems, but a deeper meaning can be explored. In this poem Frost paints a simple picture that appears to be clear, until it takes a look to reveal what is hidden within the words. In order to understand the emotions and deeper meanings in this poem, these two aspects of the poem is required: images and colors.

There is a sense of darkness in the poem, such as "darkest evening of the year" and "The woods are lovely, dark and deep". Every word has not only a symbol in the meaning of this poem using words which make significant but also the words represent dark and gloomy colors. "To watch his woods fill up with snow", the readers see a man stopping in the forest to watch it fill up with snow and the woods in the poem symbolize death. The woods and death both look cold and miserable. Frost tried to make this poem feels miserable through the image and colors of cold and gloomy woods that the man is thinking about suicide. "The woods are lovely, dark and deep". In this line, the man is telling himself he will die in peace if he stays within the silent woods and linguistical colors in this line ?dark and deep? emphasize what the man is telling. "But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep". These final lines remind the man who has commitments to something that he loved and he can not abandon these loved ones that he loved so much.

By analyzing these elements of the poem, the man in the poem was contemplating suicide. The poem is representing a scene of how someone who might be contemplating suicide thinks and feels.
