Below are some notes from what I currently understand of suffering but as yet I have not properly got my head around the interventions and linking them to suffering and is where I would really like some help.


Suffering has no single definition but can be considered ?a state of mind? that is experienced in varying duration and intensity. Suffering is commonly related to illness, pain and dying, is unique to each individual and cannot be easily treated. Currently only a handful of researchers have conducted studies in relation to the effects of and interventions for suffering providing little available information. Broadly, suffering is linked to spirituality, as suffering can be the result or cause of individuals beginning to question their meaning and understanding of their life and relationships. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by relapse, remission and progression. MS is of unknown cause, has no cure and presents differently in every patient. Medically, MS is not considered fatal, but has the potential to increasingly impact on a persons quality of life physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually and financially as progression continues. Nursing interventions designed to assist the person who is suffering can optimize overall health and well-being therefore this paper will focus on the nursing interventions of spiritual assessment and therapeutic communication and how they can support a person who is suffering and who has MS.

The four themes of suffering are isolation, hopelessness, vulnerability and loss with individuals often experiencing pain, fear and hopelessness as well as altered beliefs and emotions. While the intensity to which suffering is felt can be categorized as distress, misery, anguish or agony (Reed, 2003). Health care professionals should try to understand suffering from each patients perspective through empathy, compassion and caring whilst remembering that each individuals concept of suffering differs as culture and socio-economic background guides every individuals definition (Fagerstrom, Eriksson, & Engberg, 1998; Reed, 2003).
