Essay Instructions: Social Change, Leadership, and Advocacy Applied
Last week, you selected and described a professional or societal problem/issue that you are passionate about. (attached) Now, you are asked to expand your thinking about this problem/issue (or a different one) by considering how it would benefit from social change, leadership, or advocacy efforts. Once you determine that a certain professional or societal problem/issue would benefit from such efforts, the next step is to set a manageable social change, leadership, or advocacy-related goal, one that you might take on and/or could support. Library or Internet resources related to the problem/issue can assist you in completing this important step.*
*You may wish to use this problem/issue for you Final Project as well as for appropriate Application Assignments going forward. You will be asked to submit the issue/problem you will use for your Final Project in Week 3.
To prepare for this assignment:
• Review the articles “Expanding Multicultural Competence Through Social Justice Leadership” and “Multicultural Competence, Social Justice, and Counseling Psychology: Expanding Our Roles.” Pay particular attention to problems/issues that concern you and that could benefit from social change, leadership, and/or advocacy.
• Review the articles “Bringing Advocacy Counseling to Life: The History, Issues, and Human Dramas of Social Justice Work in Counseling” and “Counselor Advocacy: A Qualitative Analysis of Leaders’ Perceptions, Organizational Activities, and Advocacy Documents.” Think about the application of social change, leadership, and, particularly, advocacy as they relate to problems/issues discussed in the articles.
• Review the articles “Leading Change ??" Why Transformation Efforts Fail,” “Inter and Intra Professional Social Work Differences: Social Works Challenge,” and “Lost: A Survival Guide to Leadership Theory.” Reflect on societal or professional problems/issues that concern you and, again, the potential role of social change, leadership, and/or advocacy.
• Identify at least one professional or societal problem/issue that concerns you and that would “benefit” from social change, leadership, or advocacy, and explain why you think it is worthy of such efforts. It can be the same issue you selected last week, or a different one.
• Using the Internet, find at least three additional sources of information (e.g., research article, print literature, videos, websites, etc.) related to the problem/issue you selected.
• Think about how the problem/issue might benefit from social change, leadership, and/or advocacy and a manageable goal you could set related to these three areas. Think too about how reaching the goal might impact the problem/issue and how and why it might do so.
The assignment (2??"3 pages):
• Describe one societal or professional problem/issue that arouses your passion, one that would benefit from social change, leadership, and advocacy. Explain why it arouses your passion and why you think the problem/issue is worthy of such efforts. Be specific.
• Describe a manageable social change, leadership, or advocacy goal (or goals) related to the problem/issue that you might take on and/or could support.
• Explain how and why accomplishing the goal would impact the issue.
• Cite the three sources of information you used related to your issue.
