Instructions for Pre Civil War College Essay Examples

Essay Instructions: The Mid-term essay is as follows.

Over the last two conferences we have discussed the various causes for the prohibition movement that culminated in the passage of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and supporting statutes that we call Prohibition. Between 1920 and 1935 the sale of alcoholic beverages was heavily controlled. As I noted in the first Conference the road to Prohibition had two stages. The first was the temperance movement and state efforts to pass local statutes of prohibition. This effort tended to disappear during the national crisis of the Civil War. However, it resurfaced after the Civil War and accelerated during the Progressive Period which generally covers the period of the 1890s through the First World War. The focus shifted to the national level. Inasmuch, as this is a history class the question will be history orientated. Addressing both the pre-Civil War period and the post-Civil War period; based on your reading describe in detail the various factors that ultimately lead to Prohibition. How did those factors inter-relate to each other and which of these factors do you think was the most important one to lead to Prohibition? You must support your answers. Secondly, what was the short and long term effect of Prohibition? Again support your answer.
Your answer must be in narrative form. That means no lists, but full sentences and paragraphs. You MUST SUPPORT YOUR IDEAS BY CITING TO THE TEXT(s) OR ANY MATERIAL YOU RELY ON. You may use either footnotes or endnotes, but you must use University of Chicago citation format. The length of the essay is up to you; but I would suggest that this question probably cannot be answered with any degree of completeness in less than 3 full pages. You should use normal margins and proof-read your papers.
