The construction of the Panama Canal was a monumental feat symbolizing to the rest of the world The United States’ ingenuity and industrial determination. It also illustrated that the United States was more than ready to play on the global stage. However, the financial and human cost to build the canal was heavy, and the way the U.S. government went about organizing the project was less than ethnical.

For this assignment, I want you to watch the documentary Panama Canal. Pay attention to the politics behind the canal’s construction and answer the following questions: How was the land acquired to build it? What tactics did President Roosevelt employ to gain control of the isthmus? What was the human price to build it, and who did most of the hard labor? What technologies were used to build the canal? Why was the canal deemed important to the United States? Finally, why and when did the United States cede the canal back to the Panamanians?
