The Panamanians however, did get the short end of the stick for a really long time.

The Panama Canal Treaty had an astonishing impact on international relations, such an impact, that it is still present today. Panama is the single-most busiest port in the world. With more ships trading there than in any other place, the financial boom that Panama should be receiving is now becoming apparent in Panama City's growth in size. It changed the way that trade was conducted and that travel at the time was made. No longer were ships obligated to go through the south tip of South America, but they could now travel through North and South America in order to get to their destination.
Two sides of the World were united through the creation of the Panama Canal, and none of this would have been possible, had it not been for the ratification of The Panama Canal Treaty.
