Title: Postoperative Pain Management Assessment

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1391 Works Cited: 8 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: I started working on the proposal. Here is what I got and the feedback I received.

Problem Statement:

Postoperative pain management is an important part of nursing care. Non-relieved pain may be detrimental in patient?s recovery. It may be a reason for psychological effects such as sleep disorders, agitation, increased anxiety and fatigue. Unrelieved pain may increase heart rate and blood pressure ultimately resulting in possible prolonged hospital stay, increasing cost of health care.

Bearing in mind all the repercussions of poorly-relieved postoperative pain, it is vital to make certain that relief is provided effectively. Unfortunately it is not always the case.

Research Question:

Does the level of nursing education make a difference in his or her ability to successfully manage postoperative pain.

Feedback.

problem statement made a case for effective pain management and patient outcomes. Hence the nurse would be the patient's advocate and work with pain management to control the patient's pain.

There is no mention in the problem statement about nurses or level of nursing education and pain management. if the literature suggested than some nurses are able to manage post-op pain than others then you would have a case.

Please either revise your question or expand your problem statement.

I think it would be best to reword problem statement stating about the need to further exploration of the problem based on some research. Anyway, I am open to any suggestions.

Title: pain managment

Total Pages: 8 Words: 2217 Sources: 4 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: Task:

Your task is to explore pain management considerations for the following client, newly admitted to hospital for revision of his pain management program.

Sid Johnson is a 76 year old male with a history of osteoarthritis in both knees. He has been admitted to hospital for further investigation of his chronic knee pain and revision of his pain management program. The aim is to provide multidisciplinary assessment to determine a new plan for intervention, including the necessity for future surgery (knee arthroplasty).

Sid is the main carer for his wife Nancy, who has dementia. They live in their own home.

Sid is 178cm tall and weighs 60kg. He states that he smokes “about half a packet” of cigarettes per day and has a “couple” of schooners of beer every night “to help get to sleep”.

Sid’s prescribed medications initially included a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) but this “doesn’t do anything now”. His doctor (GP) has suggested Sid start an oral opioid (Tramadol), but Sid says he is “not one of those druggies”.

Sid was attending physiotherapy, but has now not been “for a few weeks”. Some activities are particularly problematic, including getting in and out of the car, driving and managing steps.

He states that he is finding it harder to “manage” caring for Nancy due to limited flexibility and increased pain on movement. He was previously able to manage the shopping and “simple” cooking, but is now unable able to perform them or other household tasks to the same level.

Although their adult children are “supportive”, none of them live in the near vicinity. Sid states that he does not know what the future holds for himself and Nancy.

On admission, Sid appears pale and fatigued. He says that he is sick of the pain and stiffness and finds it hard to be cheerful. His current verbal pain rating is “8/10” and he is grimacing.

In the light of this scenario, you are to critically discuss:

* Your immediate priority in terms of pain relief for Sid with rationale for chosen action

* What an accurate and systematic assessment of Sid’s pain should include and what you would need to document

* Appropriate assessment tool(s) with justification for use in Sid’s case

* Additional information which would be helpful in terms of gaining a complete pain history and how this could be effectively utilised

* Psychosocial issues inherent in this scenario, which might be impacting on Sid’s pain and how they might potentially influence its effective management

* Specific education issues regarding Sid’s medications, including a rationale for introducing an oral opioid

* Evidence-based non-pharmacological therapies that might help Sid cope with chronic knee pain and improve his quality of life

* The roles and involvement of other members of the multidisciplinary team in Sid’s pain management program and why this would be beneficial in Sid’s case.

Rationale
The rationale for this assignment is for you to consolidate principles examined in Modules 1-3, by considering issues pertinent to the management of a person with chronic, non-malignant pain from a biopsychosocial perspective, including pain assessment and documentation, patient education, choice of therapies and multidisciplinary involvement.
