Instructions for Motivation Theories College Essay Examples

Essay Instructions: Assignment
The assignment is intended to deepen students? understanding of motivation theories and
principles as well as to provide students with the opportunity to show their knowledge of the
motivation and emotion area. The maximum length of the assignment in 1500 words and a
word count should be provided as part of the assignment. The word count can be plus or
minus 10% of 1500.

In preparation for the assignment students will be asked to keep a record of examples of their
emotions during one typical day. In keeping this record, it is better to focus on discrete
emotions rather than mood states. Students will be likely to have better memory for events
and have richer material to draw on for the written portion of the assignment if they enter
information in the record several times during the course of the day (for example, during a
work break or class break, at lunch, upon coming home and at the end of the day) rather than
compiling the record at one sitting. In creating the record it may be helpful to give the
emotion a preliminary label, assess its pleasant or unpleasantness, record thoughts that relate
to the emotion, and make note of the level of arousal associated with the emotion. It will also
be useful to record the circumstances that preceded or coincided with the development of the
emotion (e.g., situation, other people). Finally, the record should include notes on the
consequences of the emotion (e.g., motivational states related to the emotion, behaviour
prompted by the emotion).

Students should aim to record such detail for five distinct emotions. It is fine to record details
for more than five emotions and to then select five emotions from the larger record for use in
the assignment. The record itself is not included with the assignment.

In the written assignment, students will present a conceptual analysis of each of the five emotions using principles and concepts from emotion theories and in some cases motivation theories. Selection of concepts for analysis of each emotion should be based on the nature of the emotion and the suitability of the concept for explaining the emotion. Multiple concepts may be used to analyse one emotion and these concepts can come from different theories. The first time a principle or concept is mentioned, students should explain the principle in their own words and provide a reference. The explanation of principles and concepts may be covered in the introduction section of the essay or may be integrated with the analysis of emotions.
In the analysis students should demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the principles selected, present a convincing case for why the principles selected are appropriate for understanding the emotion, and clarify the interaction of different principles in causing or maintaining the emotion. Students? narratives should be clear, concise and free of grammatical or spelling errors. APA essay style should be used in writing the assignment. It may be helpful to have five subheadings, one for each emotion analysed.

Students may reference the textbook readings in their assignment narratives. In addition to references to readings assigned for the unit students should try to find at least three relevant books, chapters or articles related to their analyses and incorporate citations to this literature in their assignment. Using the UNE library data baseswill provide students with good leads to relevant literature. (Practice in using psychology-related data bases is valuable in its own right). The library also has an e-book collection which may be helpful.

Essay Instructions: Read the following scenario:

You are an independent consultant who has recently been hired by JC?s Casino to help improve retention issues concerning the dealers and housekeepers. Most of the dealers have been leaving the casino to work at other casinos in the area, even though JC?s Casino pays better than their local competition. On several exit interviews, many of the dealers have cited the pit boss, Joe, as being ?toxic, overbearing, evil, and incompetent.? Joe is the casino owner?s step-son and the HR director, Tom Sneed, is afraid to confront the owner.

Among the housekeeping staff, there has been an above normal rate of absenteeism and high turnover of rooms. Many of the managers who work in accounting, payroll, and other departments have had to ask their full-time employees to help cover for housekeeping by cleaning rooms periodically. Because of this problem, the hotel has had to adjust their check in times from 3 p.m. (the industry standard) to 6 p.m. Customers have arrived earlier and the hotel has had to accommodate them by creating a room to hold luggage. They have also had to hire staff to man the luggage room.

The director of housekeeping, Andrew Keehn, has been working hard to add more staff but he states ?good help is hard to find.? The housekeeper?s current hourly wage is comparable to other casinos in the area but because of the staffing shortage, the housekeepers have to clean more rooms per day than their counterparts. The casino owner only knows that there are some issues with keeping the dealers and that some customers were upset because they had to wait to check in. You have been hired for a quick fix and your suggestions were needed yesterday.

Write a 1,400 word paper in which you identify each issue and make recommendations to JC, the casino president, on how to improve overall retention. What the scenario does not provide, you can create. Be sure to include the following in your assessment:

o Evaluate at least two work motivation theories and how they can be applied in order to improve employee recruitment and retention at JC?s Casino.
o Examine possible occupational stressors that are negatively influencing recruitment and retention. What improvements would you suggest to alleviate these stressors?
o Examine the role of job satisfaction and its influence on retention at the casino. Provide recommendations for improving job satisfaction of the employees and how that can play a part in successfully improving retention.
o Discuss counterproductive employee behavior occurring at the casino. What suggestions would you make to reduce the counterproductive behavior and increase productive employee behavior?

? Include at least three references.
? Format your papers consistent with APA guidelines.
