Essay Instructions: Choose one medium (or topic) : books, magazines, radio, news, television, film, Internet/social media, public relations, or advertising). First, research that particular area and in a concise and well-organized response address the following:

? Explain why the sub-area is important to the study of mass communication.

o How has it influenced other media?

o How has policy or society changed because of this medium?


? Give a brief overview of that sub-area or of the medium addressing its history, important people,
and important events.

o Who are the key players in the development of the area or medium?

o What were the major factors contributing to the growth of that sub-area or medium?

o When did that particular medium really take off?


? Choose an example from that area that was not discussed in class and analyze it using a media
literacy strategy (5 questions, framing analysis, critical analysis of corporate ownership).

o This may be a specific television program, a film, a social networking site, a public relations
campaign, etc.


?Discuss the future impact of the sub-area or medium.

o Where do you see this field or medium in 10 years? 20 years?


You must include at least 2 outside sources in this paper. One source should come from a peer-reviewed journal. All papers must include in-text citations and a Reference (or Bibliography) page.
