Essay Instructions: The goal of this assignment is to help you think about attraction and close relationships. Kassin et al. Chapter 9 is a must-read!

The Challenge:
Perhaps there’s no more popular topic in songs than attraction and love. Choose your favorite love song of all time. Find the lyrics on the Internet; you will need to submit a copy of the lyrics with your paper.

Then write a 1.5 ??" 2 page essay (double spaced, 12-point font such as Times New Roman) that addresses the questions I outline below. Make sure to refer to specific lyrics in the song when answering both questions. Submit your paper via Oncourse Assignments by the date specified above.

Questions to Address in Paper

1. Which of Sternberg’s eight types of love (see Figure 9.8 on p. 370 of your text) does your favorite love song describe? Be sure to explain your answer so that I can tell you understand the type of love and its components. You should clearly describe the part of the lyrics that led you to your answer.

2. Given the research on attraction and/or close relationships, do you think the love described in the song is likely to last? Again, use social psychological theories described in class or in your textbook to justify your answer. Again, your answer should identify the specific lyrics that led you to your conclusions.

Essay Instructions: Select a set of songs with similar themes, and explore what and how often those themes are used in the songs. For example, how do love songs sung by female performers compare with those by male performers? You may also propose other ideas to the instructor before proceeding with your data collection and analysis.

Essay Instructions: Essay Questions (3 questions must be min. 600 words each):

Question #1: We have referred to bth Dickinson and Whitman as Romantoc poets. Read Ralph Emerson's essay "The Poet" and the introduction to the Romantic period in the Norton Anthology of American Literature, 1820-1865 and discuss how it is these very two different poets can be considered Romantics

Question #2: If in some ways T.S. Eliot's "Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrocl" is as I have argued a representative text of the Modernist era, what does this text tell us about Modernism and about the era between approximately 1900 and 1940? Discuss the poem, Modernismm and the era in your response. Consider such issues as: what this poem had to do with other Modernist texts; what it had to do with the era; what ther Modernist writers' significant concerns were; how Modernism was a response to the era, how other modernisms may have differed from the modernism of this poem, etc.

Question #3: Today, scholars of American literature and culture ponder the origins of american Moderrnism. They argue about whether Modernism began with the early twentieth century (as we presented in class that it began 1915-1945, WW II period) or a century earlier in the antebellum period. It is a matter of continuities and discontinuities. What argument can you find for the existence of Modernism in the works of authors from the antebellum period? How is it that Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Dickinson, Hawthorne, Douglass, Stowe, or Whitman might be seen as modernists or even proto-modernists? How do the writings of Eliot, Hughes, Williams, Frost, Pound, Brown, Mckay, or Stevens reach back to the romantic period? My list of authors are meant to be neither exclusive nor inclusive. Please refer to the list of characteristics of Modernism and Romanticism as a starting point for framing this essay.
