Essay Instructions: The topic of my 12 pages double spaced paper is "Premodern Morocco's Sufi policy" and it explores the interconnection between Sufism and Political rulers in the period ranging from the Almoravid dynasty (year 1040) until the colonial period (1912-1956). The paper tries to see how sufism becomes politicized in Morocco. We have then two categories: activist or rebellious sufism (against the political state) and Aquiescent Sufism (cooperating and being used by the state). This paper tries to seek the causes that lead Sufism to be co-opted by the state and how it is done, and those that push the Sufis to be against the state, and how this happens. From those two categories, other subcategories follow like rural/urban sufism, berber/arab sufism...
The material is to be found in the biography of saints and in the works on specific sufi orders in Morocco (the Tijani order, The Derqaoui order, the Kettani order, the Qadiri order). Here are some books and articles that you can start with:
