Essay Instructions: Greek Civilization.
A)Please compare Greek religion in the two different periods in their history in the eighth century, the time of Homer, and in the fifth century BCE. Please compare these two different periods on the following points: 1) the different ways they believed their gods intervened:

B) Please compare the Athenian political and social system to that of Sparta. How did each address the problem of the conflict between private interests and the public good?
Please note similarities as well as differences. Be sure to mention the attitude of each city toward luxury, art, trade, warfare, the role of women, and to compare it with the other city.
What differences, in their early development and in their social structure, do you think contributed to the two cities? very different lifestyles? What do you think about the arguments that the supporters of each city use to defend the one they admired and to criticize the one they dislike?

Family ties in Athens were stronger and women were legally the dependents of their husbands or their father. They could own no property apart from the family. In Sparta, women had rights that other Greek women did not have. In Sparta women were stronger and they formed liaisons with men as they chose. They could also own property by themselves. In Athens women did chores such as weaving or cooking, but in Sparta the women were free of all such chores.

C) Greek philosophy, Plato and Aristotle: Please compare the views of Plato and Aristotle on the following questions: how can we learn to know what is real and good and how can we avoid mistaking illusions for truth? Should one pay close attention to knowledge through the senses? Should the emotions be suppressed or controlled? What should be the relationship of emotions of reason?
What is the relationship of moral thought and action to reason, the sense and the emotions? What should be the role of the senses and the emotions in the total personality of a morally good individual? How can we set up a state in which the political leaders will govern according to the common good and not according to their own private interests? What sort of state does each favor? What are the proper emotions for rulers?

The purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to formally analyze the history and development of Greek sculpture. The paper is to be 5-7 pages of text, 12-point font, double-spaced, and complete with proper source citations, images (a minimum of six) with correct captions, and a bibliography. The images and bibliography do not count as part of the 5-7 pages of written text. Only one third of your sources can come from the internet, the balance must come from published books and articles on the subject. Any papers that do not include proper citations, captions, and bibliographies will not receive full credit, and may receive zero credit for the assignment.

A thorough paper would include:
? An appropriate thesis informing your reader of the subject and objective of your paper.
? Historical or biographical information on the subject of your paper.
? Arguments and claims that can be supported with the sources you chose to use. The importance of the structure/object.
? Visual analysis of the object/structure (detailed description of the work you are discussing and its relevance)
? Include images of structures/objects you discuss in any detail, and reference the reader to the image in the text of your paper (ie. Fig. 1).

The topic of your research and analysis will be two-fold.
Discuss the development of the male and female forms in Greek sculpture from the Archaic period through the Hellenistic periods. Discuss particularly the changing proportions, the depiction of motion, the conception of the figure in space, the degree of realism, and the means used by the sculptors to achieve these effects. You are required to cite a minimum of three male examples and three female examples to support your discussion (total of 6 minimum); provide images of these examples with correct captions, and direct your reader to these images within the text. Compare and contrast your examples to illustrate the development from one image to the next.
Do not simply repeat material you find in books, articles, the text, or class notes. Think about the subject/issues and formulate your own argument. Selecting the appropriate sources is very important to the overall quality of your work. You are required to use a minimum of three sources. Two must be from printed sources (one can be your textbook) and one source can come from the internet. Personal opinions and conclusions must be grounded within solid discoverable historical contexts, so be conservative with speculations you can?t back up through your research. 3. BACKGROUND Imagine that we are in classical Greece, attendees of a great banquet held in Olympia, after a day of watching the games. The host has invited people from all different parts of Greece to take part-- Athenians, Spartans, Thebens, Cretens, etc have all attended (you may choose which city state you are from). After the meal is concluded, some of the guests (us) have stayed behind to engage in philosophical discussion. You are free to draw on Plato, Aristotle, or Socrates, or other classical Greek philosophy in support of your arguments (any good Greek intellectual would know their works by heart, but you can use the internet to do your own research).

Keep in mind, your "character" would only have the knowledge available to a person of the ancient Greek world. Using modern ideas would not be appropriate for this forum. When you post, please identify which city state your "character" is from, and keep that in mind when you decide what you are going to say.

QUESTION TO BE ANSWERED During the evening, the host of the banquet, puts up the following topics for discussion:

Is Democracy the best form of government?
