Read the text, Chapters 14-25, and conduct additional Research. Using the National Youth Gang Center web page, their Gangs journal, and other resources, research gang membership: Who is most likely to become a gang member and why? What benefits does membership provide gang members? What are the dangers? What expectations are attached to membership?

Purpose: To understand how race, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic and other factors affect the likelihood of gang membership and reasons for joining a gang. Consider:

Are there distinctive characteristics of gang members that apply across geographical boundaries or within geographical boundaries?

Are specific groups of youth especially prone to joining gangs? Why?

How does age affect membership?

What does research indicate about the benefits and dangers of gang membership?

What expectations do gangs hold for their members? Are expectations fairly consistent across different gangs?
Write a Gang membership Report (3-4 pages, with Bibliography using APA Style). Editing will be required to produce a thorough report; you will need to synthesize the information concisely.

Essay Instructions: Using a classification schema from the text or one discovered in your current research for Module One (include example and citations), apply the classification of gangs to the information gathered in module one to explain and identify local gang types, activities and norms (3-4 pages with appropriate citations)

Compare at least three approaches to classify gang data acquired in Module One. What types of gangs are in evidence using each approach? How do you know that? Does this classification provide any specific insights or information about gangs in the Community?

What problems did you encounter in applying that classification to your data? How representative is that of other efforts?

Create your report (3-4 pages). Include a brief statement on your process (2-3 paragraphs) and appropriate citations (APA Style).

The main purpose of an Introduction is to familiarize the reader with the subject to be examined. You should be reaffirming the topic of your research, providing a brief explanation as to its purpose. In your Review of Literature you will be completing a fairly comprehensive summary of relevant readings from previous work on the topic. Here you provide brief summaries or descriptions of the work done by other authors as they relate to your current research. If you find information contained in our supplemental readings that meets this criteria, you may cite these authors in your literature review. However, make sure that your research material comes from credible sources, such as journal articles and other academic publications. All reading materials cited must be relevant to your research topic. Your literature review must include the names of the authors, the titles of their works, the publisher and year published. Please list your sources in alphabetical order, by first author's last name. Your literature review should be around three pages in length.
