Title: Dante Machiavelli Bhagavad Gita

Total Pages: 2 Words: 644 Bibliography: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Most texts that we read in the class (Great Literature of the World) shows that the classic epic text provides support, justification, or legitimation for an aristocratic form of government, in which people are divided into types at their birth; the nobles, descendents of epic heroes, rule because they are better than the commoners who are ruled. The "Sermon on the Mount" from the New Testament, Machiavelli's "The Prince, the Bhagavad Gita, and Dante's "Inferno" each offer, in their own ways, a view of the nature of society (and the individual's relationship to society) that differs from the aristocratic form derived from Heroic Age epics. Examine how one or more of these four texts, in different ways, takes "epic ethics" as a point of departure, but ultimately rejects or transforms the epic values from which it takes its starting point.
