My core subject is International Politics but the essay is in Sociology.

Essay Question: 'Empiricism provides the only truly scietific basis for social science research.' Discuss.

I would like to have a well structured essay with sub-headings. Our research-source minimum is usaually 5 books.
I have listed some books to be used in the "compare and contrast" part of the essay. Not all of them have to be used but it would be nice to use them in a manner that will prove that I understand the major differences between the theories. We've been studying empiricism, logical positivism and metatheorical realism. all of these must be incorporated into the essay as part of the discussion.

K. Popper- Conjecture and Refutations
C. Hempel- The Philosophy of Natural Science

R. Keat and J. Urry- Social Theory as Science, chs 1-4

P. Halfpenny- Positivism and Sociology

Highly Recommended

A. Giddens- Positivism and Sociology

We have also been studying Kuhn's critique of Logical Positivists' account of scientific development and how Bhaskar used these ideas to differentiate realism from the empiricist traditon. It is very important to incorporate Kuhn and Bhaskar into the essay.

should be focused on the subjects discussed in topic numbers 4, 6, 7, 8
and 9 in the course outline I have attached to this email. Please be sure

Essay Instructions: Question: "Are you more inclined towards Rationalism or Empiricism? Defend your position to the best of your ability using what you have learned about arguments in Unit 1, Topic 3."

Requirements: In your essay, you are expected to summarize the theory or point of view mentioned before moving on to analysis or evaluation of it. You are also expected to integrate the course learning materials you studied.
If you find that you entirely agree with one author or position presented in the course materials, that?s fine. You are expected only to work out the view you hold now, rather than come up with original views that no one has ever expressed before. However, in working out your views, you will be expected to present a clear statement of your position and defend your position with thoughtful analysis.
To persuade the reader that your view is correct, you will have to argue for it by supporting your point of view with cogent arguments. This entails some reflection on your part on why you hold the beliefs you do, and whether or not your reasons for holding them are strong and convincing. Facts, examples, expert opinions, relevant personal experiences, and observations can all be used as evidence to support your arguments.
Finally, in your concluding paragraph you should re-state your position clearly and provide a summary of the supporting arguments that you have presented in the body of your essay.

Essay Instructions: Please answer the following 4 questions. 3 or 4 paragraphs per question should suffice.

1. Two traditions, empiricism and rationalism, were used to explain consciousness from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. First, trace the development of empiricism in understanding mental events, beginning with Bacon and ending with John Stuart Mill. Please give some details about the ideas of the major thinkers in this lineage.

2. Now do the same for rationalism. Trace the development of this perspective, beginning with Descartes and ending with Kant. Please be sure to provide details on the ideas of the major thinkers in this tradition.

3. What is the mind-body problem and how does the materialist answer the question concerning the relationship between mind and body?

4. Briefly describe some of the early studies on the nervous system. Which of the three approaches- empiricism, rationalism and/or materialism- are best supported by these studies. Explain your conclusions.
