Essay Instructions: Early childhood educators and administrators are summoned to do many difficult jobs. One of the most difficult of these is providing young children with diverse, multicultural experiences. Even if children live in an environment with one dominant race, it is still necessary to learn about a cultural different from their own. The classroom environment should encourage a sense of well-being for all children by removing stereotypical materials, art, and books. The classroom environments give children and parents strong messages. Incorporate the following into a paper about developing anti-bias strategies:

•Discuss specific ways that you can establish and maintain a culturally relevant and anti-bias program in your classroom setting.

•Identify some principles and strategies for working effectively with English as second language students. What support or training might teachers need to implement these principles and strategies?

•Identify and describe ways you can control the classroom environment to enhance culturally relevant learning.

•Give specific examples of materials or activities that might be used.

•Include in your paper an annotated bibliography of 10 children’s picture books that might contribute to an anti-bias program.
