Essay Instructions: Write a (1000 words) on any Documentary film of your choosing. Give some background and context for the film you are analyzing; when was it made, who was the Director, what awards did it win, and any other information that helps provide context. Tell what the film is about, who was interviewed or profiled, and summarize the film. Then analyze the stylistic and technical aspects of the film ??" what worked for you, what didn’t work, and why? Be as specific as possible, and cite information from specific scenes in the film to back up your opinions.

Essay Instructions: View the documentary movie and write a paper considering the following questions.

How does the particular medium of documentary film work depict the historical reality of the Holocaust? Are there certain aspects of the Holocaust that this medium conveys more or less effectively than does a written text? How does it compare to both primary and secondary documents that we have read for this course?

How objective is the film? What is the effect of the multiplicity of viewpoints presented by the interview subjects in the film? How does Lanzmann, as the film's creator, convey his own perspective on the events discussed?

Lanzmann chooses to use comtemporary interviews to the exclusion of photographs or film clips from the time of the Holocaust itself.Why do you think he makes this choice? What effect does this technique have on the viewer?

Lanzmann produced this film in 1985, 40 years after the end of the Holocaust. How does this temporal distance enhance or diminish the usefulness of Shoah as a historical source?

Essay Instructions: Please talk about the films stated in the assignment instructions. Choose several or one genre (as you prefer) and discuss its development referencing and talking about the respective films. I though about discussing documentary development or western genre development, with films such as "the fugitive" and "musketeers of pig alley" or for documentary "nanook of the north" and films of the lumiere brothers s or other documentary film productions. Compare and contrast different films of a certain genre and its development.

OUR CLASS IS MOSTLY "SILENT CINEMA TIL CITIZEN KANE, just so you get an idea about what films to talk about and reference, compare, and discuss the genre's development. basically films of the early 19 hundreds to late 1940's.

You have watched various films/film excerpts from different genres (Dinner at
Eight, I'm a Fugitive, Nanook of the North, Triumph of the Will, Call It
Murder...). Discuss the development of genres in film, using background
information from class and additional research for your discussion. You may
focus on one or more genres, the choice is yours. However, you MUST discuss at
least TWO films we studied in class.

Please note: your essay needs to be focused on the earlier films studied in
class e.g. if you write an essay that compares early genre conventions of the
documentary to contemporary non-fiction films, ENSURE THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE ESSAY STUDIES THE EARLY FILMS!
