Title: Data Analysis and Interpretation

Total Pages: 2 Words: 694 Sources: 2 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Data analysis is an essential step in the evaluation process of all programs. McKenzie et al. (2009) explained that ?inappropriate data analyses can lead to, among other problems, harm to a person or property, implementation of inappropriate policies or procedures, and the waste of time, effort, and resources? (p. 135). Proper data analyses include three steps: create an analysis plan, put the plan into action, and justify your strategies. A carefully thought-out data analysis plan can help evaluators avoid misleading interpretations and/or conclusions.

To prepare for this Assignment:

Review the ?Stress Reduction Program: Quantitative and Qualitative Data? provided in the Learning Resources, as well as the objectives of the stress-reduction program described in the Week 2 Assignment.
Review ?Data Analysis? in Chapter 15 of the McKenzie et al. text and the articles ?Local Program Evaluation for Tobacco Control: Tips on Data Analysis?and ?Steps Tool Kit Module 7: Analyzing Data.? Consider the type of analysis you would perform on the data sets (descriptive vs. inferential, number of variables). Take into account the evaluation questions, the types of data collected, and the intended audience.
Review the eight methods of data interpretation presented in the McKenzie et al. text. Reflect on which of the eight methods are the most appropriate for interpreting the provided evaluation data.
Assignment (1?2 pages):

Describe the methods you might use to analyze the data sets provided.
Explain which of the eight methods of data interpretation you would use to interpret the provided data and why.

Essay Instructions: Data Analysis and Critical Appraisal of Evidence

You do not need advanced skills in data analysis or statistics to conduct or utilize research, as long as you understand the principles involved and can draw on the expertise of nurse statisticians and/or consultants as needed. Many healthcare organizations have statisticians, information systems specialists, and other experts on staff who can assist researchers with many of the complex tasks involving data.

For this week’s Discussion, you will investigate data analysis resources that are available to you. Begin by reviewing the readings by DeVon et al. (2007) and Scales and Rubenfeld (2005). Consider the importance of evaluating reliability and validity of instrumentation and the need for statistically determining a power analysis for an appropriate number of subjects.

Next, identify a circumstance in which you would like to analyze data for your nursing practice. Perhaps you wish to utilize research but want an expert opinion about the interpretation of the results. Or, you have an idea for conducting a research study but want to consult with a specialist before you begin.

Then identify people in your organization??"or, if necessary, outside your organization??"to whom you could turn for assistance. Interview one of these people to find out more about the potential for collaboration. Ask if they could help you with the specific data analysis needs you identified. If so, what would the process be like?

When you have gathered that information, share what you have found as follows:

Post a brief account of the data analysis resources available to you. Include the following:

What did you learn from your investigation that you didn’t know before? How do you think this resource might be useful to you?

If you have already worked with a nurse statistician or other data expert, describe this experience. How valuable was this collaboration? Share any appropriate advice with your colleagues on what they can expect from a partnership of this kind.

Essay Instructions: Data Analysis Techniques

Utilizing the file attachments, begin an analysis of the core content by identifying patterns and themes. Take an initial ?first cut? at organizing the data into topics and categories. Look at what is there and give it a name. This is called ?coding.? Codes are used to assign meaning. Look for ?convergence,? i.e., what things fit together. Coding is a process, not an event. Immerse yourself into your field notes. Continue your analysis by further differentiating codes, clustering codes, or even renaming codes if this would help clarify the meaning of the code.

Look for recurring regularities in the data that may reveal patterns that can be sorted into categories. Categories can be illuminated with regard to "two criteria: internal homogeneity and external heterogeneity" (Patton, 2002, p. 465).

Include the following:

Identify a classification system (codes, colors, categories, etc.) of themes or patterns based upon what appears to be most illuminative. What themes or patterns emerged from your notes?
What are your main interpretations of the patterns of interaction that you have observed and identified?
Develop a synopsis of your interpretations, and any organizing principles of interaction that you observed.
Identify your reactions while analyzing the data.
