Essay Instructions: CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN TOURISM ??" Semester 1 of 2011-12

Professor Keith Hollinshead and Vannsy Kuon

THE MID-SEMESTER ASSIGNMENT: THE PORTFOLIO REPORT

Introduction:
This assessment (the second assignment for TAL 028-6), asks students to produce a short portfolio report of a subject of interest to them, set against the current economic climate. The work will be handed out on Thursday 17th November 2011, and is due for submission in week 11 … that is, by Tuesday 13th December 2010 at the latest.

The Topical Questions:
The unit text, The Sage Handbook of Tourism Studies came out in 2009. Many of the chapters for the edited (Jamal and Robinson) handbook were actually prepared in 2006 / 2007, early 2008 … before the grip of the world recession of 2008 (i.e., the international downturn in the economy) had fully taken hold.

Students are now asked to consider the effects of the world recession / economic downturn for one of the following 6 areas of activity in International Tourism:
• 1 = rural tourism;
• 2 = spiritual / sacred tourism;
• 3 = the chain of distribution in tourism;
• 4 = tourism and mobility;
• 5 = overseas investment in tourism;
• 6 = tourism in wilderness areas.

Students are asked to produce a 1000 word portfolio report which:
A = gives a short but informed critique of how the selected area of activity (from 1 to 6 above) has indeed been covered in the handbook … say 250 words;

B = gives a short but informed critique of how that selected area of activity has conceivably changed over 2008 / 2009 / 2010 / 2011 under the acute changes in global economic circumstance … say 250 words;

C = gives a short but informed critique of what the changed international economic order now means for education and training in Tourism Studies / Tourism Management in terms of your selected area of activity … say 250 words;

D = gives a short but informed critique of the interface an AFRICAN country of their choice has with / in / across that area of activity … say 250 words.

Students are also asked to supply three ‘100 word’ statements (that is, where each 100-worder is of the length 70 words to 130 words) with their submission. These 3 exhibits should be labeled exhibit 1 to exhibit 3 respectively, and should provide supportive evidence for the insight the student is providing under A / B / C / D above. Each exhibit must be taken from very recent newspaper articles on the contemporary situation being described, and these newspaper feature articles may either be culled from hard-copy newspapers or downloaded from the web.

The Assessment: First Part of the Assignment
This mid-semester assignment will be graded as follows:
• Quality of précis A:
1 2 3 4 5
• Quality of précis B:
1 2 3 4 5
• Quality of précis C:
1 2 3 4 5
• Quality of précis D:
1 2 3 4 5
• Quality of relevance and critical use of the three supplied newspaper exhibits:
1 2 3 4 5 6
• Quality of written submission … in terms of structure / citation work / appearance:
1 2 3 4 5 6
• • Total marks available for the assessment = 32 marks
The above score (out of 32) will be divided by 2 to give a formal University of Bedfordshire score out of 16. The Mid-Semester PORTFOLIO REPORT is worth 10% of the semester score.

Clarifications:
? neither the reference list supplied by the student for his / her report or the three exhibits contributes to the 1000 word ceiling for the report;
? the Harvard Referencing System should be used for this assignment.
