In this scene A Midsummer Night?s Dream, Shakespeare brings up his idea of the adult, the parent, leaving their youth and beauty in their children. He brought back his idea of ?keeping one?s beauty alive through their children? in these lines. When Theseus, the Duke of Athenus, is talking to Hermia, the daughter of Egeus, he tells her how she should think of her father as a god since he is the one that brought her into this world and gave her the beauty she has. By the middle of this section, Theseus says how Hermia is like a form made of wax, and that her father has the ?power? to keep her figure intact or to dismantle it. He then leaves off in saying how Demetrius, one of the young suitors for Hermia, is a ?worthy gentleman.? He is pretty much telling her to forget about Lysander, the other suitor who Hermia is in love with, and to go with Demetrius.
Hermia, in the very next line, retorts by saying that Lysander is also a worthy gentleman.
