Title: Art of War by Niccolo Machiavelli

  • Words: 1366
  • Bibliography:0
  • Citation Style: MLA
  • Document Type: Research Paper
Essay Instructions: HIST 3090: Origins of Modern War
Textual Analysis (4-5 pp) of Machiavelli’s Art of War
Double-spaced, one-inch margins, Times New Roman 12, FOOTNOTES

Use of Art of War to analyze ONE of the following questions:
1. How did Machiavelli believe war should be conducted? What kinds of strategies, tactics, and technologies did he advocate?
2. How did Machiavelli understand the relationship between politics and war?
3. How did Machiavelli portray the ideal captain?

The point of this assignment is to demonstrate that you have read Machiavelli’s Art of War very closely and that you are able to analyze (not just summarize) the text. As you read, pretend that you are in a forensics lab combing through evidence for clues that will solve a crime. You must choose one of the three questions listed above to “solve” by carefully sifting through Machiavelli’s words and their meaning. Your answer to the question will take the form of a thesis/argument grounded firmly and clearly upon that evidence. Please underline your argument/thesis in the final version of your paper.
All good history papers have a narrative arc and are free of typos, spelling errors, and grammar mistakes.
Do not use outside sources. You will be evaluated only on how well you understand Machiavelli.

You can pick one out of the three questions to write about. Whichever one is easier for you is fine with me.

  • Total Pages: 6

  • References:4
  • Citation Style: APA
  • Document Type: Essay
Essay Instructions: This is an anthropology class to Asian culture. I am to relate Sun Tzu's Art of War to an Asian culture (preferably China). The title is just for a direction but it can be changed if need be. It is a 5-7 page research paper (the main body of writing) on some aspect of Asian culture from the anthropological perspective. The ethnographic experience is not necessary I believe. If the experience is used then either incorporate within the main body of the essay or in the appendix. If you have any questions please let me know. I will include a history paper and references. Also, please send a reply that you accept this request.

The Objectives of this Assignment Are:
1) To hone your writing and research skills to achieve a level of competence that will prepare you for 400 level courses, and to graduate as literate, articulate adults;
2) To learn more about a topic from another culture’s point of view and what it means to be “human” in that culture;
3) To communicate and cite information properly and with ethical responsibility;
4) To practice anthropology by conducting some fieldwork.
5) To understand and apply the anthropological perspective;
6) To become familiar with campus resources and how to utilize them.

TP Specs and Requirements:
• The data from your paper may be from your text and supplemental articles, plus a minimum of three library academic sources such as books and academic journal articles (articles can be obtained electronically through P********Library);
• If you are unfamiliar with the library’s research resources, take either an electronic tutorial on the Pollak Library’s website, or an orientation tour given at the library (call or check the website for scheduled tours). You can also consult with a reference librarian to help you with your research project.
• There should be no more than three internet sources (non-academic websites), if any.
• An ethnographic cultural experience. To be summarized in an appendix.
o You should have a minimum of two interviews with informants related to your topic or its culture;
o Include at least one cultural experience (restaurant, temple, wedding, funeral, performance, or business). This would be a place or event at which most of the people are speaking their native language (e.g., Korean), are participating in an ethnic-specific activity or occasion, and which would be a good opportunity to conduct your interviews. Consult with the instructor if you need ideas.
• In addition to the main body of writing, the paper must also have the following components: Title Page, Abstract, Table of Contents, Endnotes, Appendix, and References Cited.

APPENDIX

SHRINE OF ADMIRAL YI SUNSHIN

These are some pictures of the Shrine of Admiral Yi Sunshin in South Korea, including a replica of one of his famous ironclad 'turtle ships'. Admiral Yi is in fact the model Confucian hero and warrior as well as a nationalist icon, in that he embodied all the virtues of patriotism, selflessness, moral integrity, loyalty, duty and diligence, and sacrificed his life for his country. Korea was devastated by this seven-year war with Japan, but emerged victorious in 1598, and the shrine of Admiral Yi is treated with genuine reverence even up to the present. He was also a disciple of Sun Tzu's Art of War and regularly used his maxims such as: "If the soldiers are committed to fight to the death they will live, whereas if they seek to stay alive they will die." Although his forces were badly outnumbered in every battle, his philosophy was that determination and dedication could make up for inferior numbers, and he repeatedly had his officers and men take an oath to fight to death. Even when he was mortally wounded in his last battle in 1598, he refused to permit his officers to inform the men of this fact, lest they lose confidence and hope.
