For your midterm project I would like you to pick a country you are interested in. What you will need to do is find books or academic journal articles that provide information on the way the nation and its society was constructed. The Nation State. Remember that nations, cultures, races and ethnic groups are all socially constructed entities. In fact, most nations as creations of the state came into existence fairly recently. Therefore, you really won’t have to go back very far in history. Look for the following information.

1) Were the borders of the country created by colonizers
Were the Borders created by colonists or through conquest? Who created borders first _____then____, etc.

2) Which ethnic and language groups were included in that area
A lot of times Countries have several ethnic group, several languages in the area.

3) How the country got its official language and religion
Usually a country has one official language and religion. Need to figure out how one group got their language and religion to dominate

4) Whether conquest or colonization played a major role in the country’s history
For example some countries were created, and they have funny borders there’s one that has a river that goes on for miles. The country is narrow and long that’s because conquerors made it that way.

5) If certain groups were excluded or expelled from the nation
That has happened often. Nation includes groups like sometimes groups that speak one language and actually don’t have that religion or language then you’re an outcast. For example Jews weren’t seen as citizens for a long time.

6) If genocide or ethnic conflict took place

7) How migration or immigration contributed to the formation of the nation

8) What national myths were used to develop a sense of nationalism
For example there’s this myth about United States that we came here, the place was empty we had to tame the wild frontier but ignores the fact about millions of Native Americans.

I am asking you to write 5 pages on Yugoslavia/Former Yugoslavia. This project will involve going to the library databases and finding the correct information. You need to make sure to find information on the history and social development of the country you choose. I do not want internet sources such as Wikipedia or Encarta, travel web sites, or news articles. I want you to find at least five academic sources of information on the country you choose. I love something that is written by somebody from a University. If you go to project muse, which is a database thru the library, if you go through the list of database in the library this has social sciences journal articles. They are tremendously useful source of information. You will need to cite all sources you use to write your paper. I will not accept a paper that has no citations.

Essay Instructions: Compare the two communist countries (Poland and Yugoslavia) regarding the main characteristics of the communist regime. Here are some issue areas that should be compared. Was the rise of communism a product of internal development, of imposition by an external force, or a combination? How did the communists succeed in seizing power and maintaining it? What was the social base of their political support? Who were their political allies? Who were their major political enemies and how did the communists treat them? Were there any revolts against the communist regime?


Give identification of the historical context in which communism came to power in each of the two cases.

This paper is going to be about the countries of Poland and Yugoslavia. Compare them regarding their reforms after communism. WHAT systems of government do they have? HOW are their leaders chosen? WHAT do their new political institutions look like? WHAT kinds of economic reforms have they undertaken and with what success? SAY something about their ethnic or religious conflicts, and other phenomena that are politically important for the respective countries.

The identification of major similarities and differences between the two cases. The identification of their consequences and the trade-offs. Please make it organized and clear.

My paper one will analyze the early 90s civil war in the former Yugoslavia with a concentration on Bosnia-Herzigovina. The civil war that was, at times, between three different factions is an area that brings some interesting questions and answers.
