Title: What is Killing the Beluga Whales of the St Lawrence Estuary

Total Pages: 2 Words: 653 References: 2 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: I do not need 600 words

What is Killing the Beluga Whales of the St. Lawrence Estuary?

Instructions for Completing the Assignment:
One goal of this is to encourage you to approach problems from a scientific perspective. Another goal is to introduce a systems perspective to the way we approach environmental problems.
Please apply these two perspectives to the following task:
Let?s say that you are a scientist with Environment Canada. You know that the beluga whale population in the St. Lawrence Estuary is stable but very low, and the population is considered to be threatened.

Your task is to state an alternate hypothesis (different from the one proposed by Martineau et al.) about what might be killing the St. Lawrence beluga whales, and then design a scientific program of monitoring, observation, and/or experimentation that would help you test that hypothesis.
Your answer should include the following, with an overall length limit of 350 words:

A statement of your hypothesis. What might be causing the deaths of beluga whales in the St. Lawrence? This also should only be one or (at most) two sentences long.

o Your hypothesis should be different from the hypothesis put forward by Martineau et al. about PAHs. You can choose any of the causes mentioned in the table (above) as the focus for your
hypothesis. Note that ?contaminants? is still a viable option, but please choose a different contaminant (not PAHs); agricultural fertilizers or pesticides are possible choices.

A design for a scientific study based on your hypothesis. Outline a scientific program that would allow you to determine whether the factor that you have identified is a significant threat to the health of the belugas. Your scientific program might involve observation, monitoring, sampling, testing, or experimentation, or any combination of these.
o This part of the assignment should be no more than 250 words in length.
o Note that you don?t need to refer to any fancy technologies or experimental procedures, and you don?t need to know how a particular chemical or other environmental factor would affect whale physiology. Instead, just apply simple logic to your hypothesis: How would you go about testing it? Would you need to take samples from the whales? from the water? from the soil? Would you need to do experiments? observe whale behaviour? monitor human activity?

An explanation of how your scientific program represents a systems-based approach. This part of your answer also should be no more than one or (at most) two sentences long. How does your approach take into consideration the broader system that influences the beluga whale population?
