Dr. Wakefield offers “lessons from an insider” about power and influence. Although Dr. Wakefield’s arena was that of policy and politics, many of the lessons she shares, such as “there’s really no advantage to being a wallflower,” “knowledge helps to build bridges,” and “you can gain a lot by giving a little” are relevant to all settings.

For this Application, choose one or two lessons from the video program that resonate with you. Compare these with what you learned about the leaders you read about and discussed this week. Did any of them exemplify these lessons?

With these thoughts in mind, address the following points in a 1- to 2-page essay:

Identify the lesson(s).
Identify a nurse leader who has put the lesson(s) into practice, and briefly describe in what way he or she has done so.
Describe how you have used or will use the lesson(s) in your work setting.

Essay Instructions: The essay should have a clear thesis(stated at the end of your paragraph) and should be well-developed and well-supported by examples from the poems as well as your own explanations. Do not use outside sources in constructing the essay. Cite line references rather than page numbers for all quoted poetry using MLA parenthetical format. Essay Instructions: Andrei Codrescu-Creative Nonfiction Writer (Research Paper)

You will be writing an essay which offers a biographical sketch, your view of the writer’s work, a critical review of what others have had to say about the writer’s work and a complete list of the writer’s publications (bibliography).

Getting Started:
You will have read at least one essay by your chosen author. Begin jotting down all the things you already know about him and what you like, so far, about this writer’s work. How would you characterize the writing? What questions do you have about the writing? The purpose of this kind of brainstorming is to get you recognize what you already know so you can begin to ask questions about what you don’t know. Also, many times these initial writings, grounded in your personal experience, will suggest the frame or structure for your essay.

Things to Read:
You will need to read at least one book-length piece by Andrei Codrescu (“Wakefield” has been chosen as a main piece); you will also need to read at least 3 shorter prose pieces by Codrescu. In addition, you will need to track down and read at least 3 reviews or critical pieces about Codrescu work (a sort of triangulation of view points other then your own).

Things to Include:
1. A biographical sketch of Codrescu’s life and work.
2. A description and discussion of his work from your own experience reading him.
3. A discussion of the critical response and reviews the writer’s work has received over the years.
4. As complete a listing Codrescu’s publications as is possible (bibliography).

Quality and safety issues in health care have been a focus for many years, and they came into sharp focus with the Institute of Medicine’s 2001 report Crossing the Quality Chasm. The IOM has been calling for interprofessional collaboration and recently suggested that health care professionals be educated together instead of in isolated groups. In this week’s media presentation, Dr. White spoke about the importance of interprofessional collaboration to improve quality and safety. Reflect on the media, Dr. White’s comments, and the readings for this week. Then, consider the following:



What are the barriers and benefits of interprofessional collaboration? How might these barriers be overcome?



How can interprofessional collaboration improve quality, safety, health care outcomes, and patient/ professional satisfaction?

With this in mind: Post a description of your experience with interprofessional collaboration. Determine areas within your place of practice that can be improved through interprofessional collaboration. In your description, address the bulleted questions above.

In this week’s media presentation, Dr. Trautman, Dr. Wakefield, and Ms. Coyle discussed how public policies initiated at the national or state level ultimately influence what occurs at the institutional and local level of nursing practice and health care delivery. Health care policy is usually developed to address either cost, quality, or access to health care. Select one public policy that currently is impacting you and your current practice. Consider the following:



What was the policy designed to address: cost, quality, or access?


Does the policy appear to be achieving its intended results? (What data are you basing your assumption on?)


What have been the effects (adverse or positive) of this policy on the other two drivers?


How is this policy affecting your nursing practice?


To what extent would an ethical or value-based framework guide the development of the policy?
Next, consider a different issue??"something you care personally about or see or experience on a daily basis??"about which you would like to influence a practice change through the policy process.

With this in mind:



Post a description of a public policy that is having an impact on you at the local level. Summarize your analysis of the policy using the bulleted list above as a guide. Then, describe an issue you would like to influence through a change in public policy. Include if, or how you would utilize ethical and value-based frameworks to guide your policy development.
