Essay Instructions: Assignment sheet – Cause/Effect Research and Annotated Bibliography (200 points)

Task: For this essay you’re going to ask a provocative question, utilize our library and its resources to find an answer to that question, and ultimately write an essay detailing your answer to that question.

Goals: We’ll continue our use of the 5 paragraph academic structure (including the development of the introduction and its three parts, focused body paragraphs and clear topic sentences and transitions). We will practice building body paragraphs around citations, while smoothly working quotes and paraphrases in with our own writing, because your voice will still be the dominant voice in the paper. This is still your show – think of the sources as your background singers. But for this essay there will also be additional goals. The most obvious is that you’re going to have to compile information from several sources and use them to support your thesis (which will be the answer to your question). Then, you’re going to have to demonstrate your ability to follow MLA format. Therefore, you’ll have to use in-text citations correctly. You’ll have to know when to cite information and when it’s common knowledge. You’ll have to know how to cite a variety of sources. And you’ll have to know how to document all your sources on a Works Cited page.
To summarize, here are the three big goals:
1. Ask and answer a good question with research
2. Smoothly incorporate that research without losing your voice
3. Document everything correctly using MLA format

Annotated Bibliography (50 points!): A great way to boost your grade this semester is to turn in a strong Annotated Bibliography. An annotated bibliography is just a Works Cited page that also includes summaries of each work. Your annotated bibliography needs to have six sources on it and one of them needs to be a book. I have posted a link on Blackboard to a website that will show you how to construct this annotated bibliography. There is also a link to “Citation Machine,” a website that will construct correct citations for you, provided that you gather the right info and select the right type of citation.

Sources: Your final bibliography should be a list of works only actually used in the paper. You will need to incorporate at least four sources. Your bibliography and documentation will account for about a quarter of the grade on your paper, so be careful Be sure that you document any facts that you use that are not common knowledge, whether you are summarizing, paraphrasing, or quoting directly. You may not use more than one website! Use sources from our library and I’ll be very impressed.

Essay Instructions: I'm suppose to write an argumentative synthesis paper and my choice of paper is about violent video games and its effects on children.
