Title: The effects of TV Violence on Children

Total Pages: 7 Words: 2447 Bibliography: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: This was my proposal:
In the 78 years of since the invention of television, it has gone from a luxury item to a common household appliance. However, with an average of two televisions per household, its effects on children and society at large have transformed this household appliance into a virtual weapon of mass destruction. With the increased level of violence shown on television each day, children have become immune and insensitive to violence and are more aggressive verbally and physically than ever before. While this is a serious problem, it is not one without a solution. Parents need to take a proactive role and monitor what their children are watching as well as discuss what is being viewed on television rather than rely on television as an electronic babysitter for their children.
This paper will target a college educated audience and will examine: the use of television as an electronic babysitter by parents, the effects and consequences of television violence on children, and the various ways that we can protect our children from the effects of prolonged exposure to television violence.

In this assignment you will use the hypothesis developed in the first draft of the paper and expand it further.1. You will provide a more detailed analysis of why you believe the independent variable you have chosen will cause the dependent variable.

2. Your independent and dependent variables must be clearly defined so they can be measured.

3. You will also need to provide more detailed information on your chosen theoretical perspective and discuss in detail which principles of that theory will help explain your hypothesis.

4. You must also think about what kind of research findings you will need to support your hypothesis. Since this is a cause-effect relationship you will most likely need experiments to support your hypothesis and NOT case studies or surveys. Experiments will show that one variable causes the other. For example for the TV violence hypothesis, you will want to find experiments that show that there is a causal relationship between TV violence and homicide or violence in general or experiments that show that there is a causal link between TV violence and depression and sadness.

In the introduction to the paper you will demonstrate your knowledge of this approach by presenting its basic principles or assumptions, especially those important for your hypothesis. In this introduction you will also explain why you believe the chosen independent variable will cause the behavior you predict. For example the hypohesis that home-schooled children will have poorer academic achievement than children in public or private schools, taught by licensed teachers rather than by their parents. The possible explanation for the relationship between home-schooling and poor academic achievement could be the expectation that when a parent, whose has not been trained through education courses how to teach, will not do as good a job as someone who has completed a MA degree as most New York State teachers have. This lack of expertise is expected in this hypothesis to negatively affect the academic achievement of the home-schooled child. These sorts of explanations for why you think there is a causal link between the variables in your hypothesis must be provided to help the reader better understand your hypothesis.

You will need to locate research supporting your hypothesis in the social science databases of the library. You can access these databases with your home computer. You do not have to go to the ECC library. I am recommending Psycharticles and Academic Search Premier as the best choices of databases where you may find the research you will need. You may only use library data bases for sources of research. These data bases contain published peer reviewed studies from experts in the field of psychology. You may also use books and journal articles to support your ideas. Much of the information on the internet is not written or reviewed by experts and is often inaccurate. Consequently internet sources are prohibited. Limit your sources to the library data bases, or studies published in journals or published books. You will present this research in the middle section of your paper to support your hypothesis. The more studies you can present to support your hypothesis the higher the grade, particularly if the studies come from one of the suggested databases. Try to find at least two or more studies from the databases supporting your hypothesis. Your paper should have at least two or three citations on every page. The paper should be about 4 pages with an extra page for "references." It should be written according to APA-format. using 12-pt. type and double-spaced. You will end your paper with a summary and conclusions statement in which you briefly summarize the research you have presented and tell whether you feel there is enough research to support your hypothesis or will much more research be needed in the future to adequately support it.

You must also decide which developmental theory you will use to center your ideas within. You must select the theory from those presented in chapter 2. They are: Behaviorism, Epigenetic Theory, Sociocultural Theory, Psychoanalytic Theory, Cogniive Theory or Social Learning. You will find a brief description of the theoretical approaches in Chap. 2 and more detailed discussion of some in other chapters in the text. See the Index. For example, if you believe that early childhood experiences and desires, buried in the unconscious, have the greatest impact on behavior you examine in your hypothesis, then you will want to select Psychodynamic Approach. If, on the otherhand you believe genetic factors in interaction with the environment determine development you may wish to select the Epigenetic Theory. You can use the ideas of this approach along with any ideas you may wish to add to it to develop your hypothesis. In the introduction to the paper you will demonstrate your knowledge of this approach by presenting its basic principles or assumptions, especially those important for your hypothesis. In this introduction you will also explain why you believe the chosen independent variable will cause the behavior you predict. For example the hypohesis that home-schooled children will have poorer academic achievement than children in public or private schools with other children, taught by licensed teachers. The possible explanation for the relationship between home-schooling and poor academic achievement could be the expectation that when a parent, whose has not been trained through education courses how to teach, he or she will not do as good a job as someone who has completed a MA degree as most New York State teachers have. The theory here could be Behaviorism which believes behavior is learned through reinforcement and punishment. Trained teachers would better use reinforcement and punishment to instruct children. The lack of expertise in parent with no formal training in Education, is expected in this hypothesis to negatively affect the academic achievement of the home-schooled child.

The steps for the project are simple:

1. Present your hypothesis and tell which is the dependent variable and which is the independent variable.

2. Explain why you think this variable causes the other.

3. Tell which theoretical approach best suits your hypothesis and what are the main ideas of that approach important for your hypothesis.

4. Present studies from the databases which support your hypothesis.

5. End with a summary and conclusion statement telling what your conclusions are about your hypothesis, after looking at the research.

6. Include a separate references page on which you cite all the studies you used.
