Essay Instructions: I need a paper that deals with the difference on how two tragic heroes recieve their fate between Oedipus and Hamlet in the works Oedipus the King and Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. It should address the how Oedipus''s fate is spelled out by the gods before his birth while Hamlet is given his fate by the ghost of his father. How do these two differ from each other? How does this reflect the times they were written in. The Greeks had a strong sense of fate. What changed in the renaissance that allows Hamlet to be much more active in choosing his own destiny. I also want a part of this paper to address why Hamlet decides to go the swordfight at the end of the play. Throughout the entire play, Hamlet has been one step ahead of the people trying to trap him. Yet, he then decides to go to this obvious trap for him. Furthermore, when he decides to go is at the same point he stops giving soliluoqies. Please address this as well.

Title: Samson as a Tragic Hero

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1451 Works Cited: 0 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: For this essay, you will need to employ the "Look Close" procedure to identify a unifying theme in a Biblical "pericope" or literary unit. Use the story of Samson in the Bible (Judges 13-17) as he plays the role of the tragic hero. Your thesis statement should make a claim about what the theme is. For the purposes of this essay your theme should meet these criteria:

Themes have a subject and a predicate.
Themes are not cliches.
Themes are generalizations about life that are deduced from specific situations.
Themes should account for all elements and patterns in a literary work (or "pericope" in this case).

Your body paragraphs will then need to prove to your audience that the theme you have identified is actually a central theme of the story. Body paragraphs should be unified around a patterns, symbols, literary devices, motifs, parallelism, etc...

Include an introduction that makes the significance of your topic clear. End with a conclusion that makes the essay feel finished rather than abandoned.

Your essay should never resort to summary. Assume that your reader is at least as familiar with the passage as you are.

Your essay should contain many paraphrases, references, and quotes from the pericope itself. Remember that the words and patterns of the story are your "facts" - develop your essay by providing ample "factual" proof for your claims.

Make sure you understand the difference between summarizing and using concrete references from the story to prove your point.

Important: Analyze the passage by taking it apart and looking at how the author assembles the pieces to develop a theme. This will probably include some literary terminology as exposition, climax, denouement, round characters, symbols, conflict, etc..

Here are some of the characteristics of the Hero's Journey:

*Power to save society
*Have super powers, but also a weakness.
*They have a mark on birth which distinguish them (called for a commision - fate/doom - dont want to go).
*They gather friends
*Confront and kill the nemesis
*Faces the nemesis early but fails.
*Intimate connections with home
-sometimes have a love
-wavering public opinion
*In the process of saving home they become "damaged" to the point that they cannot live in home anymore.

Do not develop a religious theme. Sound more like a philosopher. Bring new insights, rather than showing proof of what is already there.

Correct MLA format for page numbers, spacing, title, citations, and work cited page. A thesis statement that makes a claim about the theme of the literay story.
Body paragraphs that have a main idea and ample concrete development.
One inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman, or Ariel Font.
