Title IX: As Ancient as Egypt
The Title IX law established in 1972 states that ?no person in the United States shall on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.? Many may wonder how such a ?new age? law could be relevant to ancient history. Taking a look back into the time of the Ancient Egyptians, you will see how women?s rights were put into existence as early as 3100 B.C.E. In many cultures, women were not respected and did not play important roles in society. Egypt was the first group to develop a respect for women and even have them as pharaohs. Because of the high infant and child mortality rate, women were considered important for their role as child bearers and were given respect accordingly. In Egyptian society, pharaohs were considered to be kings, gods, and their highest ruler. This paper will explore Egyptian views of women from the first ruler, Sobeknefern and the most important and respected female Pharaoh, Hatshepsut, to the last known Pharaoh, Ptolemy who ruled from 51-30 B.C.E. Some key research points other than the exploration of specific women in Egypt will be to compare women?s roles in other societies during that same time period. The findings will show that women?s rights, Title IX which we know of today, had really begun to develop in the Ancient Egyptian society.

Title: Title Nine and its negative effect on mens college athletics

Total Pages: 10 Words: 3098 References: 6 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: TRhis is my proposal for the final paper

Imagine if you are a male athlete who has been given a full athletic scholarship to a university in the sport of wrestling, track, or gymnastics (an Olympic sport). You are in your third year of school and suddenly the program is cut and you have no way to fund or continue your education. The reason you are given for the cut is because the university must comply with Title Nine of the Educational Amendments of 1972. Title Nine prohibits discrimination in education on the basis of sex. Title IX states: "No person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal aid"(United States). It seems that athletics has created the most controversy regarding Title IX because universities are complying with this law by cutting opportunities for men rather than creating chances for women. Many universities have dropped less popular men's teams, such as wrestling, gymnastics and track because they will ultimately lose federal funding if they do not meet the guidelines of Title IX. The purpose of my essay will be to explore and educate the reader on the issues of Title Nine in college athletics. I will argue that Title IX is now a form of reverse discrimination toward the male athlete. I will also propose or explore a possible solution to this problem through the reduction of scholarships that are being used by NCAA Div. I schools.
