The World is Too Much With Us
by William Wordsworth

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not.--Great God! I'd rather be
A pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn.

Essay Instructions: Option 1
“Highly structured poems such as William Wordsworth’s “The World is Too Much with Us,” or Dylan Thomas’ “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night,” do not adequately address the concept of ambivalence.”
~ Nu Ance

In a 2-3 page essay, defend or refute the above statement. A good essay will state Ms. Ance’s point of view, the opposing viewpoint and a supported, arguable thesis with concrete examples from either William Wordsworth’s The World is Too Much with Us” or Dylan Thomas’ Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” and Dr. John Briggs’ book, Fire in the Crucible. Your paper must have three documented sources: one from the poem of choice, one from Dr. Briggs’ book and one from your journal source.
Dr. Briggs "Fire in the Crucible"

Option 2

In a 2-page essay, argue the case that ambivalence and omnivalence are essential elements of the creative process. To support your argument, you must use the experience from one of the creative geniuses we have discussed in class and one quote from Dr. John Briggs’ book, Fire in the Crucible. A good essay will present an arguable thesis, the opposing viewpoint, and solid support of the thesis. Your paper must have two documented sources: one from Dr. Briggs’ book and one from an outside scholarly journal.

abnivalence= conflict of consciousness
omnivalence- something that moves u forward.
