Title: The Scarlet Letter

Total Pages: 3 Words: 1041 Sources: 1 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: I need an essay with a thesis statement that represents this thought: In the Scarlet Letter, the letter A represents the transformation of Hestor Pyrnn or the transformation of Hestor through the letter A. PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT USE MY THESIS STATEMENT EXACTLY. THE THESIS STATEMENT SHOULD BE MORE SPECIFIC AND BETTER WORDED BUT HAVE ALL 5 POINTS.
I was thinking of the following A as adultery to outside world (grave sin that threatens her soul, etc.), A as Arhur Dimesdale to Hestor because of the elaborate A that she designed in size and style, the physical result of her adultery i.e. Pearl, A as Able, and finally A as awe.
I started an outline below but got hung up. PLEASE DO NOT USE THE OUTLINE EXACTLY. I AM LOOKING FOR SOMETHING BETTER THAN THIS. ALSO, THE QUOTES WERE TAKEN FROM ENOTES, SPARK NOTES, ETC. THERE MAY BE QUOTES THAT TELL THE SAME THING BETTER OR NOT. USE WHAT YOU THINK IS BEST. DO NOT BE LOCKED IN BY THE OUTLINE. IT ONLY RECEIVED A C IN CLASS.

To the world, the letter A meant adultery but to Hestor the love and passion for Author Dimesdale. Hestor made the letter elaborate, etc.
As time progresses, the meaning is trasforms from adulteress to able to eventually awe.

I. Thesis Statement: The Transformation of Hestor Pyrnn Through the Use of the Letter A
II. The Letter A as Adultery
A. A grave sin that threatens Hestor’s soul
1. Extreme Intensity associated with the scarlet letter - “that I experience a sensation not altogether physical, yet almost so, as of burning heat, and as if the letter were not of red cloth, but red-hot iron. I shuddered, and involuntarily let it fall upon the floor."
B. B. Hestor bravely accepts blistering disapproval of the Puritan town
III. The Letter A as the Physical Result of her adultery – Pearl
A. "See ye not, she is the scarlet letter. (100)”
IV. The Letter A as Able
A. Hestor is strong
1. Refuses to “borrow from the future to help her through the present grief”
B. Town begins to reinterpret the scarlet letter. The A “meant Abel, so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman’s strength (243). “
V. The Letter A as Awe
A. Hestor resumes charity upon return from Europe
B. “The scarlet letter ceased to be a stigma which attracted the world’s scorn and bitterness, and became a type of something to be sorrowed over, and looked upon with awe, yet with reverence too. (227)”
FROM THE TEACHER: SHOULD INCLUDE QUOTES. All quotes must be cited, and each quote must be inside your own sentence. Here is an example from another novel: The protagonist declares that courage is not “a man with a gun in his hand” (Lee 112). Put the last name of the author (Lee) and the page number (112) in parentheses. Note that I have written in literary present tense. Please remember that all essays about fiction should be in PRESENT TENSE.
Also, be sure that your essay contains a mix of vivid, concrete details and thoughtful commentary. A concrete detail is a small, specific fact – not a generalization – from the novel. You must have an abundance of these details in order to prove your argument. An essay that is lacking in concrete details will not receive a good grade. I have provided some examples on the back of this page. Other criteria for a good content grade include a clear thesis, clear topic sentences, logical organization, smooth transitions, and thoughtful commentary.

Generalization – Asher Lev cannot control his talent.
Concrete detail – Asher draws on the wall in his sleep.

Generalization – Billy gets rich after the war.
Concrete detail – After the war, Billy opens an optometry practice and invests in well-known businesses like Holiday Inn and Tastee-Freeze.

A final note: Please remember that the penalty for plagiarism includes a zero on an essay

will be evaluated on the basis of content and grammar (50% each). Be sure that you have a clear thesis stating your position on the topic you choose to respond to. Also, be aware that ten points will be deducted for each major error (run-on or fragment) in your paper. Five points will be deducted for each subject/verb agreement error.

There are faxes for this order.

Title: The Scarlet Letter and The Rapture of Canaan

Total Pages: 5 Words: 1859 References: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: open to all writers!

Topic: Identify a shared theme that connects these two texts: The Scarlet Letter & The Rapture of Canaan.

Subject: Sexual Morality and Gender Roles: American literature could be construed as the story of female sexual repression. In The Rapture of Canaan, Ninah worries about her desires for James, and in order to control them, she clamps clothespins to her arms, stomach, and nipples (61). She struggles early in the novel with her Grandpa Herman's sermons about "wicked women," but later she embraces pleasure as an acceptable part of the human condition. In this shift, she she moves away from the Puritan legacy of sexual repression. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester lives in the Puritan era, and is subjected to its stringent moral codes for female sexual behavior. Does Hester overcome this view of pleasure as wicked, or does she accept Puritan gender roles? Read for parallels or differences between these two characters' views of bodily pleasure.

Key instructions: Demonstrate your thesis by selecting key scenes from each book that illustrate the pattern. You must quote from each text. Use a lot of quotes. Make sure all quotes have the page number where the quotes are located in the books. Do not quote passages just to make plot points. Quote in order to make a point about the exact language used by the author. Always set up the quote by orienting the reader to the quote's position in the text, and always follow the quote with a statement connecting it to your thesis.
