For this paper of at least 750 words (include word count on the final draft as the syllabus instructs), your assignment is to investigate, analyze, and describe the way in which a short story, poem, or play from our text functions as literature. In our classroom discussion, we examined how William Carlos Williams’ “The Red Wheelbarrow” would have been very different if it had been written as a sentence in standard prose. From there, we thought about how a poem can change our usual notions of language, of perception, and even of visual presentation. Finally, we concluded that a poem can comment on our ideas of what’s important or necessary in our experience or thinking. For instance, most people wouldn’t even expend much thought on a wheelbarrowred, green, or chartreuse, let alone write a poem about it—but Williams does. You could argue that by reducing our perceptual field to some of its most fundamental elements, he makes us reconsider what we think we know about language. You might want to look at Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” (541) and show why this is a story and not merely a recitation and remembrance of motherly advice and admonitions. Is it something about the relationship uidas specific as you can—quote the text—about what you see in the story that reveals elements of conflicts, character, plot, moral valuation, or universal archetypes. Any story, poem, or play in the Meyer text can serve as the focus for this assignment, but make an argument focusing on those elements you see as central in the definition of the piece of literature you choose as art.

To help you with terms and elements of various genres read Meyers’ introductions to each genre listed in the text on pages xvii-xix. It might be helpful for you to look at Meyers’ definition of a literary term in the Glossary of Literary Terms (1619-1643) in the text to help you anchor your argument. For example, you may want to look up the definition of “symbolism” to examine Hughes’ use of the rose in “Formula,” but there’s really no need to cite more than a sentence of Meyers’ definition in your essay. Instead, you should work with your own concept of the rose as a symbol of beauty in both nature and art. Try to be as specific as you can in both your argument and in your support for your claims (once again, use examples from the text).

Another name for "abstract" is "non-representational": meaning art that consciously TRIES not to be "realistic," but rather is consciously "unrealistic," in order to suggest something important about life. Choose one author, and one instance of abstraction, and describe what you believe that author is trying to "get at," through that abstraction. What is s/he trying to suggest? What methods is s/he using to do so? Does it "work" for you? Why or why not? Need a bit of range-- refer to writers' works.
