Instructions for The Parable College Essay Examples

Title: The Parable of the Prodigal Son

Total Pages: 2 Words: 550 Works Cited: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: The Final Exam is a response to your reading of The Parable of the Prodigal Son.
Discussion Topic: The younger son has realized and resolved his conflicts by the end of the parable. The older son, though, remains outside at the end, and has not realized or resolved his conflicts. In a 2-3 paragraph response, argue that the parable's main purpose was to encourage the audience to identify with the older son's conflicts. How would you describe that audience and what lesson does the parable communicate to them?
Parable Discussion
Most readers will agree that the tale is an intentional allegory. The literal tale involves a father and two sons, and although the focus is on the younger son, the older son is also faces conflicts: both are protagonists. The tale also expresses a figurative perspective, with the father playing the role of the primary deity of The New Testament, and the sons representing opposing earthly perspectives.
In this response, I ask you to consider the message of the parable to either audience. It is rather easy to see the younger son?s lesson, as he learns it within the tale itself. The older son, however, does not resolve his conflicts. In order to respond, you must first decide what the author intended for the older son to learn, and then discuss the value to the reader of that lesson.
What is the ?learning? that should take place in the older son? Why might that be more important than what the younger son gains from the experience? The paper should not merely retell the tale, but should have a thesis that suggests the meanings through evidence (significant details) that supports that point.

I only need 2 to 3 paragraph because it is a discussion.

Title: The Parable of the Sadhu

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1360 Sources: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: In this paper, you will be doing a close rhetorical analysis of a text and the author’s persuasive strategies. You will build upon class material about rhetorical elements: purpose, audience, the writer’s stance, topic, ethos, pathos, logos, and effective persuasion. What is a rhetorical analysis? Take a look at the handout which gives a
sample rhetorical analysis of U2’s “Sunday Blood Sunday.” You will be analyzing the author’s persuasive strategies in the essay, including appeals to the audience through ethos, pathos, and logos, as well as his or her use of other literary devices, such as metaphor or repetition, to get his or her point across effectively.

Choice 1: “The Parable of the Sadhu” (102-110)
As a retired investment banker and a teacher of finance and ethics, Bowen McCoy uses his experience encountering a sadhu, or holy man, in the Himalayas as a lesson for thinking about corporate culture.

What persuasive strategies does McCoy use to argue that perhaps we must “change the values of the group so that it can, with all its resources, take the other road” (109), the road of helping the sadhu rather than letting him die.

In your analysis, provide a close reading of McCoy’s essay and a well-supported answer to the above question. You may draw upon your personal experiences with ethical dilemmas or organizational behavior to illuminate McCoy’s strategies and to assess the effectiveness of his claims. Take into account what knowledge McCoy assumes the audience has. What values does he assume the audience holds? Your overall analysis needs to be organized like a conventional, unified essay??"with an introduction, thesis that ties together your major points, and a conclusion restating and tying up your thesis.

Essay Instructions: Research Paper.

Topics should be drawn from the four Gospels, introductory matters, theology, criticism, exegesis, etc. It is important that you identify the thesis of your paper --what you will argue for and substantiate. Use headings and subheadings that will help you and your readers to know where you are going in a logical manner. Serious attention should be devoted to the primary texts, which are integrated with the secondary sources. Choose a topic that is specific enough that you can cover in depth. A topic such as Jesus and prayer is far too general and impossible to cover with any sense of depth. Make sure that you are arguing for your thesis all the way through the paper. Leave other stuff alone that is not directly relevant. Here is an example of a specific thesis statement --in italics: The Parable of the Children in the Marketplace is positioned within a chapter that deals with the identities and roles of both John the Baptist and Jesus in Israel's history. In the transparent explanation of the parable (vss. 18-19a), Jesus compares His ministry with John's; both have experienced rejection by a fickle and unresponsive generation that does not know what it wants, needs, or possesses --thereby leading to Jesus' indictment of the present generation for its superficial quarreling and rejection of God's two important messengers.

A. The form of the paper should follow the style outlined by Turabian and our in-house Guidelines for Term Papers and Biblical and Theological Topics.

B. Please do not substitute reading the secondary sources for a careful reading of the Bible. Both types of reading (primary and secondary) need to be done in a balanced and thoughtful way.

C. In addition, articles from Bible dictionaries, Bible or religious encyclopedias, and scholarly journals may be consulted, as well as reliable commentaries (check with instructor). Any references appearing on topical reading lists may likewise be utilized.

D. At least eight standard texts (besides "articles") are to be consulted in a major way for a paper. In no case, however, should such secondary sources replace investigation of the Biblical text itself.
