Discussion Topic: The younger son has realized and resolved his conflicts by the end of the parable. The older son, though, remains outside at the end, and has not realized or resolved his conflicts. In a 2-3 paragraph response, argue that the parable's main purpose was to encourage the audience to identify with the older son's conflicts. Most readers will agree that the tale is an intentional allegory. The literal tale involves a father and two sons, and although the focus is on the younger son, the older son is also faces conflicts: both are protagonists. The tale also expresses a figurative perspective, with the father playing the role of the primary deity of The New Testament, and the sons representing opposing earthly perspectives.
In this response, I ask you to consider the message of the parable to either audience. It is rather easy to see the younger son?s lesson, as he learns it within the tale itself. The older son, however, does not resolve his conflicts. In order to respond, you must first decide what the author intended for the older son to learn, and then discuss the value to the reader of that lesson.
What is the ?learning? that should take place in the older son? Why might that be more important than what the younger son gains from the experience? The paper should not merely retell the tale, but should have a thesis that suggests the meanings through evidence (significant details) that supports that point.

As a retired investment banker and a teacher of finance and ethics, Bowen McCoy uses his experience encountering a sadhu, or holy man, in the Himalayas as a lesson for thinking about corporate culture.

What persuasive strategies does McCoy use to argue that perhaps we must “change the values of the group so that it can, with all its resources,take the other road” (109), the road of helping the sadhu rather than letting him die.

Topics should be drawn from the four Gospels, introductory matters, theology, criticism, exegesis, etc. It is important that you identify the thesis of your paper --what you will argue for and substantiate. Use headings and subheadings that will help you and your readers to know where you are going in a logical manner. Serious attention should be devoted to the primary texts, which are integrated with the secondary sources. Choose a topic that is specific enough that you can cover in depth. A topic such as Jesus and prayer is far too general and impossible to cover with any sense of depth. Make sure that you are arguing for your thesis all the way through the paper. Leave other stuff alone that is not directly relevant.
