Langston Hughes was an African American artist, who traveled the world seeking for the truth, and found himself a cultural icon of the twentieth century. He is credited for creating the jazz poetry form, that infuses jazz beats and rhythms, his words accompanied the sax and piano creating an enriched harmony of resonance. Like Whitman, his free from was free from social dictates, and progressive symphonies towards the everlasting continuum of human experiences.
?The negro speaks of rivers? http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15722
Is composed of three parts. ?There?s the I?ve known rivers section, the ?my soul has grown deep as rivers section?, and ?the world?s greatest rivers section? (shmoop editorial team). The first part Hughes begins with a possessive pronoun, to establish a precedent of his self-knowledge and his familiarity of rivers. He uses the river as a metaphor to represent the motion and importance of the human veins and the interconnectedness of man to each other. Juxtaposing the rivers and earth to the layout of a human man and his veins, we see an element of Whitman here using the body to organically represent the flow of nature and his connection herein. The second part ?my soul has grown deep as rivers? is the fourth line and the last. It attests to his growth and maturity and his soul expanded with the knowledge that could only have been obtained with his journey to Africa. He traces the journey of slaves and reverses the course, their by negating the action he breaks even with the momentum of enslavement, the familiar course of forced human migration. , that allows him to identify with his origins and the origins of original man. Lines 5-8 have the pronoun plus verb beginnings. Hughes?s uses the flow of the river to display mans? uncommonness and self awareness Hugh?s traces the lineage of man and their ascent by order of rivers in which they are associated with spawning civilization. The Euphrates is first, and is widely known as the center for the first civilization and to the cultural epoch of the Mississippi river and New Orleans, which was the origins of jazz and his identity as a creator of a black art form, began. Lines 3,9,10-feature enjambment and gives the aesthetic of looking like a river. According to the editors at shmoop, ?Our eyes are constantly moving in zigzagging fashion as we read this poem, and that zigzag motions looks to us to be very similar to way a river winds and bends its way through the earth? (shmoop editorial team).
?Song of myself? by Whitman, uses the same pronoun plus verb form as ?The negro speaks of rivers?. They both use enjambment to change the mood and tempo of the poem. I also feel Whitman and Hughes both use individual self-discovery and exploration of different cultures to extend and perhaps evolve their poetry and themselves. It is clear that nature in relation to human form is displayed in ?the negro speaks of rivers?, which is one of the main ingredients in Whitman?s poetry. But instead of merely a celebration of the human form as in ? I sing of the body electric?, Hughes uses action to almost erase and or negate the linear dictations, of the slave route, that define his race in America by traveling in the opposite direction as a welcome ?free? man who defined himself.
