Ok, so the question I'd like you to address for your next essay assignment is this: what is the relationship between 'good and evil' and perception? In other words, is there such thing as a purely good or purely evil act, or can all actions, by necessity, only be valued as either good or evil by a given perceiver? When addressing these questions, consider our discussions of subjectivity, relativity, belief, and interpretation. This is a three page essay (not including a works cited page and checklist), for which you must support your argument using specific examples from at least three of the following four sources: Merwin's "The Stranger," Blake's "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell," Emerson's "Compensation," and Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." If you have questions about this, please email me sooner rather than later. Good luck....

Essay Instructions: BREATHING SPACE
(100 points)

?Then I asked: Does a firm persuasion that a thing is so,
make it so? He replied: All poets believe that it does,
and in ages of imagination this firm persuasion removed
mountains; but many are not capable of a firm persuasion
of anything.?
--William Blake
The Marriage of Heaven and Hell

This will be a challenging essay to create some cohesive flow from, but do your best to relate the topics to one another. Use both texts, Crossing The Unknown Sea and Tuesdays With Morrie to support the points you make. You need to understand the texts, so please do not answer from opinion only?reference the texts wherever appropriate. Some of these question sets are mandatory, while others offer you choices to make, so read the directions for each part carefully. There is intentionally no suggested page length this time?you must use your own judgment.

PART I ? Mandatory (20 points)

What does it mean to have a ?firm persuasion? in our work? How do we discover and then cultivate this? Comment on the conversation that you have already begun with something larger than yourself. What role do the elements of risk, faith and doubt play in this conversation? What was Morrie?s firm persuasion?

PART II ? Choose a minimum of 4 (60 points)

1. If our soul?s desire is to belong to the world, as Whyte states, how is it that we get so easily side-tracked? And if work is, indeed, a pilgrimage, what core elements of your being are being tested as you continue the journey? How was Morrie tested?

2. What is your inner parental voice saying to you that is keeping you from walking
to the edge of the cliff? Consider taking an inventory of your fears. How do we wake the captain within? How did Mitch Albom wake his captain?

3. What are the things you will say ?No? to in life, so that you can say ?Yes? to
what really matters to you? How can good work often go bad? What are the pros and cons of speed at work? What happens when others do not travel at the same speed that we do? In what ways are we running away from ourselves and our own mortality? Do you have a good marriage with time--or are you ?committing adultery? with respect to this relationship?

4. What does Whyte mean when he writes that ?middle age is a cyclical
visitation throughout our existence?? How can our sense of success in life imprison us as much as our sense of failure? How will you keep your ?splendid vision? (aka. ambition) alive?

5. How is our personal identity a function of our ability to pay attention to the
world around us? Comment on the roles that dignity, vulnerability and inheritance play. Utilize Whyte?s stories of the albatross and the blowhole as illustration. How did Morrie express his personal identity? His dignity, vulnerability and his inheritance?

6. How is the antidote to exhaustion wholeheartedness? What are your
elemental waters that you may need to return to? Why is claiming our happiness in life such a difficult thing to do? How does it require us to be visible? Do you think that Morrie was happy at the end of his life?

7. Joseph Campbell believes we should all have a ?sacred place.? Where do you
go where you do not owe anyone anything, nor do they owe you? What does Whyte mean when he writes that ?silence is the soul?s break for freedom?? Comment on whether or not you believe there is space between your events?

8. Who is your personal outlaw? The one who represents total freedom, who
perhaps lives outside the rules, and on his/her own terms? Are you becoming, or have you become, the adult you thought you would be when you were a child? Comment on this statement: ?To live with courage in any work or in any organization, we must know intimately the part of us that does not give a damn about the organization or the work.?

PART III -- Mandatory (20 points)

How have our collective identities been shaped over the centuries and in recent
decades? What has happened to that period of ?youthful wanderings? that Whyte writes about? What ?breathing space? have you been allowed to enjoy? Comment on
the statement: ?The heartbeat of our own time has everything to do with our individual relationship to freedom and belonging.?
