Writing assignment on "The Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee Williams


The following is a brief description of what the teacher expects in order to have a passing paper.

My teacher gives extra points for the following: usage of brackets, direct quotation, ellipses, semicolon, and colon. Please use each of these in my papers. Thank you. My teacher is very hard and strict. He grades on each of the below criterias.


Criterion 1: Knowledge of the Subject: Again, I will expect you to write on the assigned topic (see the on-line syllabus). I also have expectations in terms of the sub-category of "Extensiveness." You will be doing this paper at home, and you will have had two weeks to reflect and write on the topic. As a rough guideline, aim for at least two typewritten pages. Pay particular attention to the extensiveness of your paragraphs: in English 0099 (a course which is not a college-level course), a paragraph is defined as having from 7 to 10 sentences.

Criterion 2: Awareness of the Reader: You will be writing about a work of literature, a poem. In order to support your explanations and assertions, you will need to refer to specific details in the poem. You will also need to use direct quotes for illustration and evidence. We have discussed three specific ways to use direct quotes and I will expect you to use direct quotes in this paper.

Criterion 3: Organization: As in the diagnostic essay and the essay on short prose fiction, I will expect you to have an organized, structured essay. Write and introductory essay in which you state the central idea of the essay and provide an organizational plan for the essay.

Criterion 4: Format: Your essay must be in MS Word format and sent to me as an e-mail attachment. You should use a size 12 font, double space, and leave 1 inch margins. I would prefer that you not right justify. I expect no misspelled words. You should be able to indicate titles in standard formatting (underlined or in quotations, as appropriate). If you use direct quotes, use the MLA style of parenthetical notation. Even though the models in the text book give the line numbers in the parenthetic notation, you need to include the author''s last name and the page number of the quote in parentheses immediately after the quote. You do not need to provide a bibliography for this essay.

Criterion 5: Punctuation: I expect correct use of the basic marks of punctuation (the comma, the apostrophe, quotation marks, and end punctuation). If you are confident with these basic marks, then you might want to experiment with some of the more advanced marks (semicolon, colon, dash, brackets, and ellipsis periods). If you have scored a "4," or a "3," or lower on either the diagnostic essay or the essay on short prose fiction, you need to show me that you have remedied the problems that have caused such a low rating.

Criterion 6: Sentence Structure: I will expect no mistakes in sentence completeness (fragments and comma splices) or in standard usage (particularly errors in subject-verb agreement and pronoun-antecedent agreement). As above in Criterion 5, if you have scored a "4," or a "3," or lower on either the diagnostic essay or the essay on short prose fiction, then you need to demonstrate that you have remedied these problems.

Criterion 7: Style: I expect standard edited English.

Essay Instructions: Examine the aspects of the play. What is it about? How does the author communicate his or her message. Explore theme, character, structure, setting, etc. 1500-1700 word paper. must use 4-5 sources at least 3 of which must come from academic journals or books.
