Talk about how the many characters were affected by the war, regardless if they were in it or not. Talk about the atmosphere of a post-World War I 1920's. Talk about of it is an age of booze, sex, and partying but many people are only escaping their dreary realities of life. Talk about how veterans returning from war trying to figure out where they fit in society and in civilian life. Talk about how one of the main characters becomes impotent because of the war and one is a promiscuos woman, sleeping with every man she meets to fill the void of love in her life. Also talk about she represents the 1920s and Hemingways "make old things new" writing style by comparing her and love. Love is supposed to be monogomaus, but she loves all these men and needs to have sex with them. Is the idea of monogomaus love old? (one paragraph dedicated to this). I also will have a list of three books to use a refrence/back up support for this paper, you only need to use two of those books. Also include those two books and The Sun Rises in the MLA format bibliography. Thanks.

Here is what I wrote for my paper porposal.

For my paper proposal I have chosen to read Ernest Hemingway?s The Sun Also Rises and explain how World War I is tied into this novel. I will explain how Hemingway?s experiences in World War I influenced his writing of The Sun Also Rises. I will attempt to, to a certain degree, take on the role/viewpoint of a soldier returning from war and acclimating back to civilian life. Many veterans feel that civilian life is dull or less exciting, and are searching for a sense of purpose as they felt in the military. The Sun Also Rises is quoted as ??the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation...? which is exactly what I want to write about. Although Hemingway was not a soldier himself but an ambulance driver, how he is able to so masterfully take on the point of view and emotions of a World War I veteran is amazing. His characters are profoundly affected by the war and with their return to civilian life, must decide how they fit into society. The 1920?s was very vibrant and exciting time but also morally corrupt and filled with drunken getaways to escape harsher realities. Hemingway does a remarkable job taking us on a journey with his characters and how they decide what they will become in a post-World War I society. World War I has affected each character differently, for example one character became impotent and the other incapable of loving and sleeping with only one man. A list of literature of I will be using for my paper is as follows;
Anything Goes: A Biography of the Roaring Twenties by Lucy Moore
Only Yesterday: An Informal History of the 1920s by Frederick Lewis Allen
No Man?s Land: Combat and Identity in World War I by Eric J. Leed

Essay Instructions: An analysis of interesting similarities and or significant differences(E.G, in theme, concepts, style, characteristics preoccupations and modes of imagination) between THE GREAT GAStsby by FITZGERALD and THE SUN ALSO RISES BY HEMINGWAY

Excerpt From Essay:

Essay Instructions: THE EXPATRIATE MOMENT IN PARIS
Both The Sun Also Rises ( Ernest Hemingway,) and Tender Is the Night ) F. Scott Fitzgerald,) share several features:
expatriate characters at loose ends, anxiety about various kinds of failure, threats to masculinity,
and troubled women. Choose one of these themes to explore in the two novels. What do these
books suggest about the age itself?

Point out interesting/troublesome aspects of the texts, provide support for your argument. You will thus need to address BOTH texts and should address them in a balanced manner (i.e., devoting roughly comparable space to each). In a compare/contrast paper, usually, you can find it easiest to talk about the two texts separately, pointing out what you see as notable in Text A before shifting to your discussion of Text B in which you give particular attention to similarities and differences (and how those differences are significant in the larger reading of both works). Organize your paper around elements (e.g., role of author, style, etc.) and describe how both texts deal with each element, but I usually find such an approach is harder to pull off as the reader ends up ping-ponging between texts and losing sight of "the biggger picture."

. QUOTATIONS. you should make good use of direct quotations in your discussion. You should generally avoid long passages -- try to find a way to pick out only those bits that are most relevant using an ellipses (". . . " -- note spacing betwen periods) to indicate where you've cut text -- but if you do have a long passage, i.e, longer than 4 lines of typed text, then the same should be presented in a block which is set off from the remainder of the paragraph in being single-spaced with margins moved in 1/2" on both sides. You don't need to include quotation marks around a block quote as these are implied in the blocking.
