Your final project for AED 200 will be to write an Educational Debate Persuasive Paper on a current educational debate. You will pick one of the debates listed below. Throughout the course you will continue your research on the topic to support your position on the debated issues. The paper will be your argument to persuade readers that your position on the debate is correct. Your paper will also need to address the opposing viewpoint and provide arguments against this view. For the final project you will need to include at least 3 reliable resources that support your thesis. Your paper should be 1,750-2,100 words long and follow APA guidelines. (Times Roman Numeral, 12pt, title page, reference page)

Thesis Statement: School uniforms are an effective way to improve student discipline, increase student focus, and increase student motivation.

I.School Uniforms Lead to Improved Student Discipline
A. Less fighting over controversial clothing
1) Non-uniform clothing often leads to students wearing offensive articles of clothing that may cause conflict among students.
2) Instituting school uniforms will effectively decrease this problem, as students will not be allowed to wear clothing that may offend their classmates.
B. Students who wear uniforms more likely to follow rules
1) Studies indicate that students who are required to wear uniforms are more likely to follow school rules.
2) By following school rules, students will be on their best behavior, thus increasing discipline in schools.
II.School Uniforms Lead to Increased Student Focus
A. School Uniforms switch focus to academics
1) Students will not be focused on the clothing that their classmates are wearing. Instead, they will be focused on the learning tasks at hand.
B. Greater Productivity
1) Increased ability to focus will allow students to achieve greater productivity.
2) Increased productivity can affect student’s sense of self-satisfaction.
III.School Uniforms Will Increase Student Motivation
A. Increase Performance leads to increased motivation
1) As uniforms will allow students to focus on their learning, it will lead to greater performance and motivation. Students will be inspired by their successes and will aim higher.
IV.Counterarguments and Defenses
A.School uniforms diminish creativity and individuality.
1)School uniforms may prohibit students from expressing creativity or individuality through their clothing, but clothes are not the only measure of a student’s individuality. There are, in fact, a number of ways in which students can express themselves.
B.Costs are too significant
1)Many critics believe the cost of uniforms is too significant to require all families to purchase them. This cost can be combatted in a number of ways, including subsidies.
2)Also, parents must consider if the benefits of instituting school uniforms outweigh the monetary costs. Having a safe school environment and students with increased focus and motivation may be worth it.
V.Conclusion: Requiring school uniforms can have positive impacts of the lives students, as it will increase discipline that will allow them to focus on learning and will motivate them to higher levels of academic success.
