Total Pages: 4 Words: 1476 Works Cited: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Statement of Purpose- Prompt: The Statement of Purpose should describe how this Clinical & Mental Health Counseling Master's Degree program at UCLA will fit your personal/professional goals. Include your strengths in interpersonal skills, experiences with multiculturalism, involvement in team building, and participation in volunteer actives.
*Interesting introduction
*Personal/professional goals: I can envision myself in a career helping troubled youth in a juvenile detention center or possibly a career in a public outreach program that counsels and aids the less fortunate, perhaps at a battered women's shelter. Personally, I’ve always felt the need to reach out to others who are less fortunate, abused, or disadvantaged in some way. I especially feel compassion for adolescents struggling with family issues, problems at school, or other crises because I myself struggled at an early age due to forces outside my realm of control. I want to inspire youth and people. I want to be the voice of those I feel are silenced with shame and despair.
*strengths in interpersonal skills.... make something up… maybe how I’m a good listener, try to be nonbiased and impartial….I am aware that positive reinforcement like eye contact, body motion and hand gestures tell someone I’m listening and care about our conversation. I’m a skilled communicator who works well with others.
*experiences with multiculturalism.... lived in Galway, Ireland for a study- abroad program. Lived in Guadalajara, Mexico for 2 months studying Spanish during the summer. Have visited Hong Kong, Bahrain and Thailand, all separate trips, to visit my husband who serves in the military. Maybe something about how traveling abroad made me respect other people’s cultures (like Bahrain and their stance on the modesty of women and different religious views than my own) and witnessing the poverty in Thailand and coming back appreciating even the little things I had taken for granted. Also Mexico, their unique folkloric dances, also being apart of The Day of the Dead festival (El Dia de los Muertos) where Mexicans honor and celebrate their dead by adoring the gravestones with colorful flowers, art and letters and have lavish festivals in departed’s honor. Irish traditions and culture...everything moves at a slower pace and how the people lived with very little, but surprisingly, were very happy people. And something about how these life lessons can only be learned first- hand by actually absorbing yourself in another culture and experiencing another's culture on their terms- not yours.
*Involvement in team building and participation in volunteer activities: team building- I organize and plan events for my Young Adult youth group at my church. I have to work with others to coordinate activities and build strong relationships to accomplish our goals. Volunteer activates- I volunteer at YMCA in the Big Brother/ Big Sister program tutoring kids in an after school program. I also teach swimming lessons every summer. I also have a Vietnamese "little sister" named Jessica, who speaks very little English, who I personally tutor at her home 3 times a week and I take her to movies and do other fun activities. I also taught her how to swim. I try to be a positive role model for the kids I help and inspire them to dream big.
*Rap up by telling the Board…. something like… how I would be privileged to attend UCLA and would make the most of my educational experiences at their University.

Essay Instructions: I need help writing a "Statement of Purpose" for admissions into graduate school - Biology. The majority of the statement will be based on my research experience. Things such as hardships or overcoming obstacles, etc are meant to be placed into a "Personal Statement" which I will also attach so that you do not repeat too much of the stuff in the "Statement of Purpose."

I have actually already written a draft version of the "Statement of Purpose" but it still needs a lot of work. However, it should make this project a lot easier as the writer will have something to work with. I will attach this as well.

I have attached an excerpt from the admissions web page on what they are looking for:

For each research experience during your undergraduate and possibly postgraduate career, describe the following: What was the overall goal of your project? What hypothesis did you test? How did you test your hypothesis? (Meaning - What experiments did you perform? What techniques did you use?) With whom did you interact (e.g. did you work with a more senior member of the lab? Did you work independently?) What were your results? What was the physiological/medical/biological significance of your results? How did your results fit into the overall goals of the lab?
Have you presented your work at a scientific conference or symposium? Are you a co-author on a scientific abstract or manuscript? This includes abstracts or manuscripts that have been submitted to a journal or meeting but have not yet been published.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? How will earning a PhD in the biomedical sciences help you to achieve your goals?
