Essay Instructions: Title: The Sperm and the Egg

Describe the life of a sperm and the life of an egg from start to finish.
Cover the following points in your story:
- Trace the movements of the sperm and the egg from their development to fertilization.
- Describe the function of each of the male and female internal and external sex organs in relation to the sperm and the egg.
- Describe the role of the sex organs in fertilization.
- Be creative. Consider giving the sperm and egg personalities as you describe their traveling adventures.

Essay Instructions: ASSIGNED RESEARCH ARTICLE: The immunoglobulin superfamily protein Izumo is required for sperm to fuse with eggs by Naokazu Inoue, et al (2005)

This paper should be organized in more of an analysis/interpretation and NOT focused on methods and experiments of the primary research article listed above.

There will be 4 parts to this paper:
1. INTRODUCTION: This section will provide the background for understanding the research paper. It needs to place the research in the appropriate context of what the "big picture" is. Why is this topic intersting and important to the "big picture"? (Length: a paragraph or two)

2. DISCUSSION: This section requires you to interpret and critically evaluate the results presented in the research paper. Consider these questions, do the results support a specific hypothesis? If so, what is it? (INCLUDE POINTS FROM THE PAPER AND OTHER SUPPORTING REFERENCES IF APPLICABLE!) Do they disprove a competing hypothesis? What are they? (REFERENCES NEEDED HERE!) Are there multiple explanations possible for these results? How so? (REFERENCES NEEDED HERE) Are the authors justified in drawing their conclusion? Why or why not? (Length: a MINIMUM OF 2 to 3 pages, most of your outside sources will be placed in this section)

3. CONCLUSION: Use this section to build your perspective of the specific field of study. identify the gaps in our understanding. How does this paper fit into the "big picture" of this area of study? How does it fit in the "big picture" of developmental biology as a whole? What does the future have in store for the results concluded in this paper? What does the future have in store for this area of biology? (Length: a paragraph or two)

4. REFERENCES: ***PLEASE PLACE REFERENCES ON PAGE 5, after the 4-pages of writing***
List all the references cited. You may only use primary resarch papers, reviews and other relevant literature as outside sources. THREE of the five references need to be PRIMARY RESEARCH papers, not counting the assigned one listed at the top of this description.
