Title: Sociolinguistics

Total Pages: 8 Words: 2621 Bibliography: 4 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: This can be any topic in Sociolinguistics. Here are some ideas

Pidgin/Creole languages
Bilingual/Code-switching
Codeswitching in Cantonese-English children (or really codeswitching in any context)
The effects of social networking on AAVE (African American Vernacular English)

anything with AAVE, pidgin, creole languages, codeswitching

Here's one idea that might work:

Pidgins start off filling important but limited roles as lingue franche (the plural of lingua franca) or languages of wider communication, but often develop a growing range of functions and increasing complexity until they evolve into a creole and its use for the entire range of social functions.

It often said that creoles are 'simpler' than either lexifier or its substrat Do you think this is true for Jamaican Patwa? What do you understand 'simple' to mean in your answer? In other words, how do you measure simplicity?

(Definitions: Lexifier and substrate are identical in Jamaican Patwa. The lexifier is the language that provides most of the vocabulary. The substrate contributes to the grammatical structure.)
